Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed a Rs 1,928 crore redevelopment plan for Tura town, focusing on infrastructure, tourism, sports, housing and urban modernisation projects aimed at transforming the region into a major development and investment hub.
A comprehensive redevelopment strategy aimed at transforming Tura into a modern urban and tourism hub was reviewed on Tuesday as the Meghalaya government intensified efforts to upgrade infrastructure, public amenities and economic opportunities across the region.
The review meeting, chaired by Conrad K. Sangma in Shillong, focused on projects collectively valued at nearly Rs 1,928 crore. Senior Cabinet Ministers Timothy D. Shira and Sanbor Shullai, along with top government officials, attended the high-level discussion on the future development roadmap for Tura town.
Officials presented updates on several ongoing projects worth more than Rs 1,331 crore, which are expected to significantly improve administrative infrastructure, tourism facilities, sports amenities and civic services in the region over the coming years.
Among the major projects reviewed was the Tura Integrated Administrative Complex, being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 165 crore. The project is scheduled for phased completion beginning in September 2027 and is expected to strengthen government service delivery in the region.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the PA Sangma Sports Complex and its West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track and Field Stadium and the Tura Technology Park, all of which are being developed to improve sports infrastructure and promote innovation-driven growth in western Meghalaya.
Urban improvement initiatives such as the beautification of Tura Bazaar, construction of a new Convention Centre and the development of the Pelga Tourist Circuits and Hospitality Complex were also discussed during the review. Officials stated that these projects are intended to enhance tourism potential while improving public infrastructure and economic activity.
Additional ongoing works include the construction of a Working Women’s Hostel, heliport infrastructure and the Tura Water Supply Scheme aimed at strengthening essential civic services for residents.
The meeting was informed that redevelopment work at the Polo Orchid Hotel is expected to begin shortly, adding another major component to the town’s tourism and hospitality expansion plans.
Apart from the ongoing projects, the government also reviewed development proposals worth Rs 242.74 crore that are currently ready for the tendering stage. These include the redevelopment of Najing Bazaar, a multi-level parking and cinema complex at SMELC, the proposed Tura City Park, an Active Ageing Centre, a Kids Zone at Araimile and the planned Tura Promenade.
Officials further discussed several upcoming initiatives that are still in the planning phase. These include the Chief Minister’s Youth Centre, renovation of the Circuit House, development of a commercial complex, installation of modern street lighting and sports infrastructure development at Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Conceptual-stage projects estimated at around Rs 155 crore were also reviewed during the meeting. These projects include affordable housing facilities, an archery complex and additional commercial infrastructure intended to support long-term urban growth and economic development.

During the review, Sangma stressed the need for timely completion of all projects and instructed departments to strengthen coordination among various agencies to ensure smooth and efficient implementation of the redevelopment programme.
The ambitious redevelopment push is expected to position Tura as a key urban, tourism and investment centre in Meghalaya while improving connectivity, public services and employment opportunities for local residents.
