Himanta Biswa Sarma began his second term as Assam Chief Minister in a grand Guwahati ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, NDA leaders, and Chief Ministers from across India, marking one of Northeast India’s largest political gatherings.
A massive gathering of political leaders from across India marked the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday as he officially began his second consecutive term in office. The grand event, held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati, drew Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and top leaders of the National Democratic Alliance from different parts of the country.
The ceremony was described by the Assam government as the largest political gathering ever witnessed in Northeast India, highlighting the growing political importance of Assam in the national landscape. Thousands of people from across the state attended the event, turning the venue into a major centre of political activity and celebration.
Along with Sarma, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog also took oath as ministers in the new Council of Ministers. Leaders from alliance partners were also inducted into the cabinet, including Asom Gana Parishad leader Atul Bora and Bodoland People’s Front legislator Charan Boro.
The event witnessed the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Bharatiya Janata Party Assam president Nitin Nabin, among several other senior leaders of the ruling alliance.
According to official figures released by the state government, the ceremony saw participation from 20 Chief Ministers, 18 Deputy Chief Ministers, 11 Union Cabinet Ministers, and two Union Ministers of State. Political leaders from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and West Bengal attended the high-profile event.
The large turnout of national and regional leaders was viewed as a strong display of unity within the National Democratic Alliance and a reflection of Assam’s growing influence in national politics. Political observers also described the event as a strategic show of strength by the ruling alliance ahead of upcoming political challenges across different states.
Apart from political leaders, several prominent personalities from sports, cultural, and religious fields were also present during the ceremony. Arjuna Awardees, Padma Bhushan recipients, social leaders, and well-known personalities from different sectors attended the swearing-in programme alongside thousands of supporters and party workers.
Security arrangements across Guwahati were tightened ahead of the ceremony due to the presence of several high-profile dignitaries. Traffic regulations and special security measures were implemented around the venue to manage the movement of leaders and the large crowd gathered for the occasion.

The swearing-in ceremony officially marked the beginning of the National Democratic Alliance government’s third consecutive term in Assam, reinforcing the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance’s strong political position in the state. The event also underlined Assam’s increasing role as a major political hub in Northeast India.
