Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder inspects the proposed site for a new water pump and treatment plant at Masterpara, assuring residents of clean drinking water while pledging to preserve children’s playground space and balance community development with environmental care.

Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder on Saturday inspected the proposed site for a new water pump and treatment plant at the premises of the old Netaji Adarsha Shiksha Mandir in Masterpara. The initiative aims to provide safe and clean drinking water to several nearby wards, ensuring reliable water access for thousands of city residents.

Mayor Majumder was accompanied by AMC Commissioner Dilip Kumar Chakma, Central Zone Chairman Ratna Dutta, several government officials, and local residents who gathered to discuss the project’s impact on their community.

Speaking to reporters at the site, the Mayor said the project has the full backing of the state government and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also serves as the local MLA. “This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that every resident in Agartala has access to safe and sufficient drinking water,” Majumder stated. “We are working closely with the state government to eliminate water scarcity issues, especially in the Masterpara and adjacent areas.”

The Mayor noted that the proposed treatment plant will benefit around 2,000 to 2,500 residents in the area, along with households in neighboring wards. Once operational, it will significantly reduce dependence on outdated or temporary water sources and improve the consistency and quality of water supply across the zone.

Balancing Development with Community Needs

Addressing concerns raised by residents, Mayor Majumder acknowledged that part of the proposed construction site includes an open field adjacent to the school, which serves as a crucial recreational area and green space for children.

“There are approximately 16 ganda of land here. We will carefully assess how much of this land will be required for the plant,” Majumder assured. “The remaining portion will be preserved as a playground so that children can continue to use the field for recreation. Development should never come at the cost of community well-being.”

The Mayor emphasized that his administration intends to strike a balance between infrastructure development and environmental preservation. “Clean drinking water is essential for health, but it’s equally important to maintain public spaces for children and families. We are working to find a solution that supports both priorities,” he added.

Majumder also mentioned plans to consult with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha regarding the final layout of the project. The goal, he said, is to ensure that the design minimizes environmental impact while maximizing community benefits.

A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Growth

AMC officials stated that the new water treatment plant is part of a broader urban infrastructure initiative under the state government’s development agenda. By establishing decentralized water systems across key wards, the AMC aims to reduce pressure on existing city pipelines and ensure that every neighborhood receives equitable water supply.

Residents of the Masterpara area expressed relief at the Mayor’s assurance. “We have faced irregular water supply for years. This project will finally give us a stable source of drinking water,” said a local resident. Others appreciated the Mayor’s commitment to protecting the children’s playground, noting that it reflects a thoughtful approach to city planning.

As Agartala continues to expand, civic authorities are focusing on sustainable growth, combining modern infrastructure with green space preservation. The new plant, officials believe, will set an example of responsible urban development that prioritizes both public health and environmental well-being.

Mayor Majumder concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the people of Agartala: “Our goal is not just to build infrastructure, but to build trust. The citizens deserve both clean water and a clean environment, and we are working to deliver both.”
