PM Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Mata Tripurasundari Temple on September 22, the first day of Navratri. Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury says the PM’s visit will globally promote Matabari, one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas.
The revered Mata Tripurasundari Temple, also known as Matabari, is all set to receive a new chapter in its spiritual and cultural journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the shrine on September 22. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the redeveloped temple complex on the auspicious first day of Navratri, in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and other dignitaries.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, speaking in the state assembly on Friday, described the visit as a “historic opportunity” to showcase the temple on the global stage. “The Prime Minister’s presence at Matabari will not only attract national attention but also promote Tripura tourism internationally. This will significantly increase tourist footfall at one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas,” he said.
Redevelopment of the Temple Complex
The state government, with support from the Centre, has redeveloped the Mata Tripurasundari Temple premises with modern facilities while maintaining its sanctity. The total cost of the project is Rs. 52 crore, of which Rs. 17 crore was borne by the state exchequer and the remaining amount funded by the central government.
Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather informed that the redevelopment was carried out under the Tourism Department’s supervision. The newly constructed complex has three distinct levels. The ground floor is designed with facilities for traders selling traditional peda sweets and other items, along with dedicated rooms for storing shoes and distributing prasad.

The middle floor accommodates essential spaces such as a priest’s chamber, a museum that highlights the temple’s historical significance, and a meditation hall for devotees seeking spiritual solace. The terrace floor has been designed in the shape of a turtle, a unique architectural feature, with an extended open space for gatherings.
One of the most notable inclusions is the installation of lifts to assist elderly pilgrims and divyangjans (differently-abled persons), ensuring accessibility for all devotees. Other modern amenities have also been integrated while preserving the traditional ambiance of the sacred site.
Symbol of Faith and Devotion
The Mata Tripurasundari Temple holds immense spiritual significance as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where devotees believe their prayers are answered. The temple continues to symbolize centuries of unwavering faith and devotion. The redevelopment project, according to officials, aims not only to modernize infrastructure but also to enhance the pilgrim experience while maintaining its religious essence.
“The Prime Minister’s upcoming puja at Matabari during Navratri is a momentous occasion for the people of Tripura. It reflects the government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while promoting religious tourism,” Chowdhury emphasized.
Preparations for the Prime Minister’s Visit
With only days to go, final preparations are in full swing at the temple and its surroundings. Security arrangements have been tightened to ensure smooth conduct of the event. A large gathering is expected to line the Prime Minister’s route from the helipad to the temple, reflecting the excitement and pride of the people.
Locals from different communities have expressed their enthusiasm, saying that the Prime Minister performing puja at Matabari on Navratri’s opening day is “something historic” for the state. The event is being seen as both a spiritual milestone and a catalyst for boosting Tripura’s image as a significant destination for cultural and religious tourism.
Tripura Tourism at a Global Stage
Tourism officials believe that the high-profile inauguration will put Tripura’s Matabari firmly on the international map of spiritual tourism. With better infrastructure, improved facilities, and increased connectivity, the state government expects not only domestic pilgrims but also global tourists to visit the site in larger numbers.
“This is more than just a temple inauguration—it is an opportunity to project Tripura’s rich culture, tradition, and spiritual legacy to the world,” said a senior tourism official.
