Manuel Neuer returns from international retirement as Germany announce provisional squad for FIFA World Cup 2026 featuring Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Joshua Kimmich, and Kai Havertz ahead of matches against Curaçao, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ecuador.
A major boost has arrived for Germany ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer reversed his international retirement decision and returned to the national squad for the global tournament scheduled to begin on June 11 in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann announced a provisional 26-member squad packed with experienced stars and emerging talents, with Neuer reclaiming his position as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. The 40-year-old shot-stopper had stepped away from international football following UEFA Euro 2024, leading many to believe his remarkable international journey had ended.
However, the legendary Germany national football team goalkeeper has now decided to return for one more World Cup campaign, adding another historic milestone to an already glittering career. The upcoming tournament will mark Neuer’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, further cementing his status as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers.
Neuer played a defining role in Germany’s memorable 2014 FIFA World Cup triumph in Brazil, where the team defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final to secure the nation’s fourth world title. Over the years, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper revolutionized the modern “sweeper-keeper” role with his aggressive style, sharp anticipation, and exceptional ball distribution.
Nagelsmann, notably two years younger than Neuer, has assembled a balanced squad capable of blending youth and experience. Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich will captain the side during the tournament, while rising stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are expected to play key attacking roles.
The squad also includes several experienced international names such as Kai Havertz, Leroy Sane, Antonio Rudiger, and Nico Schlotterbeck. Young Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has also been included as an additional backup option if needed during the tournament.
Among the high-profile omissions from the provisional squad are Karim Adeyemi, Robert Andrich, and striker Niclas Fullkrug, decisions that have already sparked debate among German football supporters.
Germany remain one of the most successful nations in FIFA World Cup history. The four-time champions lifted the prestigious trophy in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014. The country also finished runners-up four times and reached the semifinals in both 2006 and 2010 before suffering disappointing group-stage exits in the 2018 and 2022 editions.
With Neuer returning to provide leadership and stability, Germany will now aim to restore their dominance on football’s biggest stage. The team will begin their Group E campaign against Curaçao in Houston on June 14 before facing Côte d’Ivoire in Toronto on June 20. Their final group-stage match will take place against Ecuador in New York, New Jersey, on June 25.
