Security forces in Mizoram and Tripura seized banned drugs worth Rs 77 crore, including Methamphetamine tablets and heroin, in two major operations. Twelve individuals were arrested as agencies disrupted cross-border smuggling routes linked to Myanmar, reinforcing India’s fight against narcotics trafficking in the Northeast region.

In a major breakthrough against cross-border narcotics trafficking, security forces in Mizoram and Tripura have seized a massive consignment of banned drugs valued at Rs 77 crore and arrested 12 individuals in two separate operations. The seizures, which include a huge quantity of Methamphetamine tablets and heroin, mark a significant success in curbing the illegal drug trade in the Northeast region.

Massive Seizure in Mizoram

According to a spokesperson of the Border Security Force (BSF), acting on credible intelligence inputs, a meticulously planned joint operation was conducted on Thursday night by the BSF, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Aizawl, and the Excise and Narcotics Department of Mizoram.

The joint team intercepted four vehicles suspected of drug trafficking on the Aizawl–Champhai section of National Highway 6, between Keifang and Seling villages, about 60 kilometers from Aizawl. A total of eight individuals were apprehended along with the vehicles.

Upon thorough inspection, the team recovered three plastic bags containing 50 packets each, weighing about one kg per packet, filled with approximately 10,000 pink Methamphetamine (Yaba) tablets. The total recovery amounted to nearly 50 kg of Meth tablets, equivalent to 5,00,000 tablets. Additionally, three soap cases containing 36 grams of heroin were also seized.

Officials estimated the combined value of the seized narcotics at over Rs 75 crore in the illegal market.

“The operation is a testament to the excellent coordination and joint efforts of the BSF, NCB, and Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department. Their synergy successfully disrupted a major drug smuggling attempt along the vulnerable Mizoram–Myanmar corridor,” the BSF spokesman said. He added that such operations reflect the unwavering determination of law enforcement agencies to protect society and prevent youth from falling prey to drug networks.

Tripura Operation: Rs 2 Crore Worth of Meth Tablets Seized

In a parallel development, security forces in Tripura’s Khowai district also intercepted a drug consignment during another joint operation on Thursday night.

The Assam Rifles, acting on intelligence and working in collaboration with the Customs Department, intercepted a Maruti Suzuki WagonR and recovered 20,000 Methamphetamine tablets weighing 2 kg. The consignment was valued at approximately Rs 2 crore in the international market.

Four individuals, including the vehicle’s driver, were apprehended during the operation. The detained suspects, along with the seized contraband, have been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal action.

“The Assam Rifles remains steadfast in its commitment to combating cross-border crime and ensuring peace and security in the Northeast region. Our close coordination with other enforcement agencies continues to yield tangible results in the fight against drug smuggling,” an official statement read.

Myanmar Connection Suspected

Officials believe the narcotics seized in both Mizoram and Tripura originated from Myanmar, a well-known hub for Methamphetamine production in Southeast Asia. Traffickers often exploit Mizoram’s porous 510 km-long border with Myanmar, which runs through six districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—to route drugs into India.

The region’s geographical vulnerabilities, including difficult terrain and limited fencing, make it a prime corridor for drug syndicates attempting to push narcotics into India and further into other markets.

Growing Threat and Countermeasures

Security experts highlight that the seizure of such large consignments underscores the growing threat of narcotics trafficking in the Northeast. Methamphetamine tablets, popularly known as “Yaba,” are highly addictive and pose a severe threat to public health, particularly among vulnerable youth.

Authorities stressed that sustained intelligence-based operations, regional cooperation, and community awareness are vital to countering the menace. Enhanced border surveillance and stricter coordination among enforcement agencies are also being prioritized to dismantle drug networks operating in the region.

The dual operations in Mizoram and Tripura highlight the vigilance and dedication of India’s security forces and narcotics enforcement agencies. With a combined seizure of narcotics worth Rs 77 crore and 12 arrests, the crackdown sends a strong message to drug traffickers operating along the India–Myanmar border.

Officials reiterated that these actions reflect the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics trafficking and its commitment to safeguarding the region from the devastating impact of drugs.
