The Left Front began nomination papers submission on Thursday for the upcoming Panchayat elections on August 8– one day after the poll schedule was announced. CPI(M) candidates handed in their papers to West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar for the 16 seats under West Tripura Zilla Parishad.
A procession, accompanied by senior party leaders, workers, and supporters, started from the Melarmath party headquarters and moved through key routes in the capital city before the candidates submitted their nominations.
CPI-M State Farmers’ Wing Chief Pabitra Kar spoke to the media, expressing confidence in winning the elections and confirming that the opposition party will field candidates for all Panchayat seats. He also voiced concerns about the fairness of the elections, citing threats, violence, and intimidation from the ruling BJP.
In the meantime, District Magistrate and Election Officer Debapriya Bardhan announced that North Tripura district will see 1,70,634 voters exercising their franchise. The district comprises 17 seats in the Zilla Parishad, 52 seats in the Panchayat Samiti, and 814 seats in the Gram Panchayat.
Accompanied by officials like Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dharmanagar Shyamjoy Jamatia, and others, Bardhan detailed the electoral arrangements in a press conference. He noted voter demographics across blocks such as Kadamtala (51,214 voters), Kalachara (43,829 voters), Yubarajnagar (46,591 voters), and Panisagar (29,000 voters).
Bardhan emphasized that nomination papers must be submitted by July 18, and the model code of conduct is now in force following the election announcement. He also disclosed the existence of 347 polling stations in North Tripura. Voting is scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM on August 8, with counting taking place on August 12 simultaneously across the state.
