Following efforts of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Tripura government, two men—one among them a terminated teacher of 10,323- returned to their hometown at Khowai on Sunday noon after spending about 10 months of jail term in Bangladesh.
They were received at Manu Land Custom area on India-Bangladesh international border check post in Kailasahar in presence of minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia and police and district administrative officials.
The duo identified as Gurupada Debbarma, a former teacher, and his brother Rajib Debbarma were apprehended by the Border Guard of Bangladesh on February 27 this year while they were farming on their land in Indian territory along the border in Khowai Bidyabil area.
According to the returnees, the BGB personnel at first took them to the Bangladesh territory and later apprehended them in the name of interrogation and then they were put in Bangladesh jail.
They were subjected to harassment despite having legal permission to cultivate their own land along the border. After a long ten-month legal battle, they had finally returned to their home on Sunday
Gurupada Debbarma, one of the dismissed 10,323 teachers, had opted to cultivate land and got involved with the agricultural farming after losing his job to earn his livelihood.
