Italy sports official said it is not interested in a suggestion to replace Iran national football team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, after remarks by a US official linked to the Donald Trump administration. Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said such a move was neither possible nor appropriate, while Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio stressed that qualification must be earned on merit.
The proposal was reportedly floated by US envoy Paolo Zampolli as a contingency if Iran withdraws. However, FIFA has maintained that Iran’s matches in the United States will proceed as scheduled. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Iranian players are not barred, though concerns remain over accompanying personnel. Iran, which qualified from Asia, has affirmed its participation. The World Cup will begin in June, with matches planned across the United States.
