India-New Zealand FTA finalized in record nine months as Minister Todd McClay credits strong leadership of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Chris Luxon, highlighting growing trade ties, business opportunities, and deepening diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation.

A rapid conclusion to a major bilateral trade pact has underscored the growing strategic and economic alignment between India and New Zealand, with both sides crediting top-level political leadership for accelerating negotiations.

New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay stated that decisive leadership from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Chris Luxon played a critical role in finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) within just nine months — an unusually swift timeline for such comprehensive deals.

In an exclusive interaction, McClay emphasized that the personal rapport between the two leaders, built through multiple global meetings, significantly contributed to the pace and success of negotiations. He noted that Luxon’s visit to India last year, accompanied by the largest-ever trade delegation led by a New Zealand Prime Minister, laid the groundwork for stronger economic cooperation.

“I have great respect for everything Prime Minister Modi has achieved and for his significant leadership. It was an honour to meet him and speak with him when we concluded the agreement,” McClay said, underscoring the importance of political will in overcoming traditional trade negotiation hurdles.

While governments have completed the bulk of the groundwork, McClay stressed that the next phase depends heavily on the private sector. He urged businesses from both nations to actively engage with the opportunities created by the agreement. According to him, sustained economic benefits will only materialize when companies take initiative to explore new markets, partnerships, and investments enabled by the FTA framework.

He further revealed plans to increase trade engagement through additional business delegations from New Zealand to India. Encouraging reciprocal efforts, he called on Indian enterprises to explore opportunities in New Zealand as well. “Trade missions can be organised on both sides. Ultimately, businesses must take this agreement and actively look for opportunities. I believe those opportunities will be significant,” he said.

The minister also extended a formal invitation to Modi to visit New Zealand, describing it as a potential milestone in strengthening bilateral ties. “He is very welcome. It would be a great honour to host him,” McClay remarked, signaling Wellington’s eagerness to deepen diplomatic engagement.

Highlighting shared values, McClay pointed out that both India and New Zealand are robust democracies, with India being the world’s largest and New Zealand among the earliest established. This democratic foundation, he suggested, provides a strong basis for long-term cooperation across trade, governance, and cultural exchange.

Beyond economics and politics, McClay also touched upon the longstanding cultural and sporting connections between the two countries. This year marks 70 years of sporting relations, particularly through cricket — a sport that has consistently brought the two nations closer. Referring to a recent T20 final between the two sides, which India won, he added a lighter note, inviting Modi to bring the Indian cricket team along on a future visit for another match.

The newly concluded FTA is expected to unlock significant opportunities across sectors including agriculture, technology, education, and services. Analysts believe that the agreement could mark a turning point in India–New Zealand economic relations, boosting bilateral trade volumes and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
