India Issues Strong Warning to Pakistan on Thursday asserting that any attempt to further escalate the current situation would be met with an appropriate and proportionate response.
During a media briefing on Operation Sindoor held in New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that the responsibility for any escalation lies solely with Pakistan, and that India would respond in a manner deemed suitable should the situation intensify.
“If Pakistan seeks to escalate the situation further, India will respond appropriately within a suitable domain. Therefore, the choice to escalate or de-escalate rests entirely with Pakistan,” Misri stated. His remarks came in the wake of heightened tensions following recent confrontations along the Line of Control (LoC) and reports of cross-border skirmishes.

Condemnation of Disinformation and Clarity on Targeted Operations
Foreign Secretary Misri did not hold back in condemning the wave of disinformation emanating from Pakistan following the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam. He described the campaign of false narratives as a deliberate attempt to mislead the international community and distract from the reality of the situation. According to Misri, the escalation did not originate from India but from Pakistan itself, starting on April 22. India’s response, he clarified, was a defensive measure aimed at protecting national security.
One of the major points addressed was the allegation that India had targeted the Neelum-Jhelum dam project in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Misri categorically denied these accusations, labeling them as fabricated and baseless. He clarified that India’s military actions were solely focused on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and not on civilian or public infrastructure. Misri cautioned that if Pakistan uses these false accusations as a pretext to target Indian infrastructure, it would be held fully accountable for the repercussions.

India has also taken issue with Pakistan’s concerted efforts to downplay the involvement of The Resistance Front (TRF), the terrorist group responsible for the Pahalgam attack. Misri highlighted Pakistan’s pressure on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to exclude references to the TRF in its April 25 press statement. He stressed that the TRF had claimed responsibility for the attack twice—first, shortly after the incident on April 22, and again the next morning on April 23. Misri noted that Pakistan’s later attempt to retract this claim, after realizing the severity of the incident, did not convince the international community.
Misri further explained that the TRF operates as a front for the UN-proscribed Pakistani terror organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). India had previously flagged this connection in its reports to the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee in both May and November 2024. Furthermore, in December 2023, India had alerted the committee about LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammad utilizing smaller factions like the TRF to carry out terrorist activities, thereby circumventing direct attribution.

Pakistan’s Track Record of Harboring Terrorists
Vikram Misri also addressed Pakistan’s long-standing reputation as a global epicenter of terrorism. Citing concrete examples, he pointed out that Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11 attacks, was found hiding in Pakistan, where he was labeled a martyr by certain political figures. Misri stated that Pakistan remains home to numerous UN-designated terrorists, as well as those sanctioned by multiple countries. He also referenced recent public admissions by Pakistan’s Defence Minister and former Foreign Minister regarding their country’s associations with terror groups.
Precision Strikes by Indian Armed Forces
Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Armed Forces launched targeted operations against Pakistan’s Air Defence Radars and systems at multiple strategic locations. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that these strikes were carried out with the same intensity and in the same domain as Pakistan’s provocations. A significant outcome of the operation was the reported neutralization of an Air Defence system located in Lahore.
India’s approach remains one of cautious yet resolute defense. The government has made it clear that while it will not initiate escalation, any hostile actions from Pakistan will be met with decisive and calibrated responses. Misri reiterated that the onus of maintaining peace lies with Pakistan, urging responsible conduct to avoid further conflict.
As tensions persist, India continues to advocate for accountability and transparency in addressing cross-border terrorism, while simultaneously safeguarding its territorial integrity and security interests.
