The INDIA bloc faces fresh turbulence ahead of its June 8 meeting as DMK opts out, while JMM and CPI(M) express dissatisfaction with Congress’s functioning. Internal disagreements over alliance management, Rajya Sabha nominations, and political conduct raise concerns about opposition unity before key electoral battles against the BJP.

The Opposition’s INDIA bloc is staring at a fresh challenge even before its scheduled meeting in the national capital, with significant alliance partners openly questioning the Congress party’s approach and decision-making style. The meeting, expected to bring together several opposition parties to strategize against the ruling BJP, is instead witnessing growing signs of internal discord, exposing fault lines within the coalition.

The most visible setback comes from the DMK, one of Congress’s major allies in southern India, which has announced that it will not attend the Congress-convened INDIA bloc meeting. The decision reflects deep resentment within the party over what it describes as Congress’s betrayal and opportunistic politics following recent political developments.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai strongly criticized the Congress, accusing it of abandoning the alliance’s collective efforts and disregarding the contributions made by DMK workers. According to him, the party’s leadership believes participating in a forum where Congress is present would undermine the sentiments of DMK cadres who feel betrayed by the grand old party’s actions.

Despite the boycott, the DMK indicated that it remains willing to engage with other opposition parties and continue discussions on issues affecting ordinary citizens. The party maintained that while it may not attend the meeting, it remains committed to broader opposition concerns and future political cooperation where necessary.

The controversy surrounding the INDIA bloc meeting does not end with the DMK. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), another important ally of Congress, has also expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of Rajya Sabha nominations in Jharkhand.

The dispute centers on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, where two seats are at stake. JMM reportedly wanted to field candidates for both positions. However, Congress unilaterally announced its own candidate for one of the seats, triggering frustration within the regional party. JMM leaders view the move as an example of Congress making important alliance decisions without adequate consultation with its partners.

Political observers note that the Congress-JMM alliance possesses enough legislative strength to secure victories in both seats. Nevertheless, the disagreement has raised concerns about trust and coordination within the alliance, particularly at a time when opposition parties are seeking to project a united front.

Adding to Congress’s troubles, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), has also publicly voiced concerns regarding the party’s conduct. CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby recently wrote to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge seeking clarification over statements made by some Congress leaders during the Kerala political campaign.

The Left party has objected to allegations suggesting that CPI(M) had an understanding with the BJP. The remarks reportedly caused significant discomfort within the alliance, prompting CPI(M) leadership to demand an explanation from Congress.

Senior CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah further intensified criticism by arguing that Congress, as the largest party in the opposition alliance, bears greater responsibility for maintaining unity among coalition partners. According to him, successful coalition leadership requires maturity, inclusiveness, and sensitivity toward the concerns of allies.

Mollah also questioned the leadership style of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that criticism directed toward alliance partners in different states weakens the broader opposition front. He argued that leaders seeking to guide a coalition must ensure that all members feel respected and represented.

According to CPI(M), Congress’s recent actions have contributed to growing tensions within the alliance and risk undermining efforts to build a cohesive opposition platform capable of challenging the BJP in future elections.

The developments are particularly significant because the INDIA bloc was formed with the objective of bringing together diverse regional and national parties under a common platform to counter the BJP’s electoral dominance. While the alliance achieved some success in presenting a united opposition during recent national political contests, recurring disagreements among partners continue to test its durability.

The June 8 meeting was expected to focus on opposition strategy, coordination on parliamentary issues, and preparations for upcoming electoral battles, including Rajya Sabha elections. However, the growing list of grievances from alliance members threatens to overshadow the agenda and divert attention from broader political objectives.

Despite the tensions, several major opposition leaders are expected to participate in the meeting. These include Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, and party leader Abhishek Banerjee, among others. Some parties, including NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), may join the discussions virtually rather than through physical attendance.

Political analysts believe that the current disagreements highlight a long-standing challenge facing opposition coalitions in India—balancing the ambitions and interests of multiple regional and national parties while maintaining a coherent political strategy.

As the INDIA bloc prepares for another crucial round of discussions, the immediate challenge before Congress will be to address concerns raised by its allies and restore confidence within the alliance. Whether the opposition coalition can overcome these differences and present a united front against the BJP remains one of the most closely watched questions in Indian politics.

For now, the boycott by DMK and criticism from JMM and CPI(M) have cast a shadow over the alliance’s efforts, raising fresh doubts about its internal cohesion at a critical political juncture.
