IG Assam Rifles (East) Major General Suresh Kumar Bhambhu met Tripura Police DGP Anurag and BSF IG A.K. Sharma in Agartala to strengthen border security. Discussions focused on curbing cross-border crimes, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and enhancing intelligence sharing, joint operations, and community engagement for effective border management.
In a move to bolster security along Tripura’s sensitive international border, Major General Suresh Kumar Bhambhu, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), on Thursday held separate meetings with Director General of Tripura Police Anurag and Inspector General of BSF (Tripura Frontier) A.K. Sharma. The discussions, held in Agartala, focused on strengthening border management and improving synergy between central and state security agencies.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh, most of which is porous, hilly, and riverine. This geography poses a complex security challenge, as the region has historically witnessed issues such as illegal cross-border movement, contraband smuggling, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes. Officials present at the meeting stressed that enhanced cooperation among security agencies is critical to addressing these threats.
Focus on Coordinated Border Strategy
According to sources, the deliberations centered on creating a more unified strategy to monitor and secure vulnerable stretches of the border. Real-time intelligence sharing, joint operations, and intensified patrolling were flagged as essential steps for effective border management. Officials underscored that seamless coordination between Assam Rifles, BSF, and Tripura Police is key to detecting threats early and preventing infiltration or smuggling activities.
A senior official familiar with the meeting said, “We have a long border with multiple challenges, ranging from narcotics smuggling to human trafficking. The need of the hour is to strengthen operational synergy and adopt a multi-layered approach to border security.”
Advanced Surveillance and Community Engagement
The use of technology also came up strongly during the discussions. Authorities highlighted the importance of deploying advanced surveillance tools such as drones, night-vision equipment, and sensor-based monitoring systems to plug loopholes in border vigilance. With drug trafficking emerging as one of the most serious concerns in the Northeast, security forces are increasingly relying on technology-driven solutions for effective interdiction.
Another important dimension discussed was engagement with border communities. Officials emphasized that local populations are both stakeholders in security and vulnerable to the consequences of increased militarization. The agencies, therefore, aim to strengthen trust-building initiatives with villagers while ensuring that stricter border measures do not disrupt livelihoods. Programs to involve local communities in intelligence gathering and awareness campaigns against narcotics were also highlighted as part of the broader security strategy.
Refining Standard Operating Procedures
The Assam Rifles and BSF, in close coordination with the Tripura Police, are reportedly working on refining standard operating procedures (SOPs) to plug existing gaps in communication and operations. Faster responses to emerging threats, joint drills, and improved interoperability among forces are being prioritized. Officials noted that new SOPs will help prevent overlaps in jurisdiction and ensure more effective deployment of resources.
Balancing Security with Stability
Security experts note that Tripura’s border management efforts must strike a balance between hard security measures and maintaining stability in border communities. While narcotics and contraband flows are a persistent challenge, human trafficking has also raised concerns in recent years, particularly involving vulnerable women and children. This makes it imperative for law enforcement agencies not only to focus on patrolling but also to develop preventive and rehabilitative mechanisms.
The Thursday meetings are expected to pave the way for more frequent inter-agency consultations. Sources indicated that similar coordination sessions will be held periodically to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing measures and adjust strategies in response to evolving threats.
Regional Security Importance
Tripura’s border is considered particularly significant in the larger security framework of Northeast India. The state not only lies adjacent to Bangladesh but also serves as a corridor for potential illegal activities that may spill into other parts of the region. Effective management of this border, therefore, has implications not just for Tripura but also for national security.

As cross-border crimes become increasingly sophisticated, security officials say that the need for a comprehensive, technology-driven, and community-sensitive border management approach has never been greater. The latest round of discussions between Assam Rifles, BSF, and Tripura Police reflects this growing awareness and the determination to address security challenges through unified action.
