In a display of remarkable dedication, health workers ensured the safe delivery of a baby girl in the remote Samrucherra village of Tripura’s Unakoti district. The heroic incident occurred on December 3, when a 22-year-old pregnant woman went into labor.
The challenging terrain of the region posed severe obstacles for the family, preventing ambulance access. Upon being contacted, a team of healthcare workers, including MPW Leanne Lalbul Halam and ASHA workers Anupa Malakar and Hemlata Debbarma, swiftly reached the woman’s home. After an initial assessment, they determined immediate action was needed.
With no other option, the health workers and the family fashioned a stretcher from bamboo and cloth to carry the woman on foot for nearly two kilometers. Their journey through difficult roads led them to Unakoti District Hospital, where nursing officer Jaba Debbarma and her team facilitated a normal delivery at 2:35 PM, welcoming a healthy baby girl.
The woman had been receiving regular prenatal care at the Nishiranjan Nandita Memorial Primary Health Center, which proved vital in ensuring her safety. Both the mother and baby are reported to be in good health.
The hospital provided free medicines and care, while the healthcare team educated the family on postnatal care. The woman’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the relentless efforts of the health workers, whose quick thinking and courage turned a challenging situation into a life-saving mission.
