Supreme Court judge, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit who is visiting Tripura observed that even as public sector professional institutions like AIIMS, IIT, NIT, National Law School, Indian Institute of Management and also institutions on architecture were doing remarkably well, the standard of education in government run schools is not at par with private schools.  Justice Lalit, who is an Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority, was addressing an interactive programme on children’s rights. Tripura State Legal Services Authority (TSLSA) organized the programme and a poster exhibition at Rabindra Bhawan in Agartala as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.

He expressed concern at the mismatch and said the disparity does not mean that government is incapable of imparting quality education to students enrolled in the government schools.

The theme of the interactive programme and poster exhibition is `Children’s rights, protecting children: Providing hope’.

Along with protecting the rights of a child’s education, Justice Lalit highlighted other aspects like health and wellbeing that also must be secured.

“There should not be any child trafficking and no child abuse in any manner. An atmosphere must be developed so that the girls can raise their issues, build their own potentiality. Create an atmosphere, allow the children to grow to obtain the fullest potentiality and do not marry the children at an early age,” he emphasized.

The Justice said that scholarships, schemes and other benefits must be given to those children who lost their both parents during the Covid-19 pandemic and these benefits must reach the needy children. The National Legal Services Authority has been doing enormous works for the benefit of the deprived sections, he asserted.

Speaking at the interactive session, Supreme Court judge Justice Hrishikesh Roy highlighted some instances of Assam and Mizoram where the legal service authorities are doing their best in providing legal and other assistance to the deprived and the needy people.

Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura, Indrajit Mohanty also addressed the session and called upon people to come forward in helping children grow with self-confidence. Among others, Justice Subhasis Talapatra, who is the Executive Chairperson of Tripura State Legal Services Authority and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Nilima Ghosh, also spoke on the occasion.

Justice Arindam Lodh, Justice Satya Gopal Chattopadhyay of the High Court of Tripura, and National Legal Services Authority’s Director Puneet Sehgal, among others, were also present at the event.
