India to become global innovation hub: Piyush Goyal

Must Read

India is set to become a global hub for innovation, says Union Minister Piyush Goyal. With strong growth in engineering exports, industrial production, and tech investment, India’s rise in manufacturing and emerging technologies positions it as a global leader in innovation and economic growth.

India is on a determined path to becoming a global hub for innovation and technology, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at the Future Frontiers Forum in London. Speaking during an interaction with Sir Ian Blatchford, Director and Chief Executive of the UK’s Science Museum Group, Mr. Goyal outlined India’s bold vision for the next decade and beyond.

He emphasized that India will be making massive investments in its innovation ecosystem over the next 10 to 15 years. These investments will be backed by government support in the form of subsidies, grants, and funding. The aim, he said, is to position India at the forefront of global technological advancement.

During his address, Mr. Goyal highlighted India’s progress in digital infrastructure, the booming startup ecosystem, and the nation’s increasing expertise in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). He reiterated that India offers a unique blend of skilled talent and cost-effective solutions, making it a natural destination for tech-driven growth and partnerships.

He also discussed the potential of the proposed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stressing its ability to deepen bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. In a social media post following the event, Mr. Goyal said that closer India-UK ties could lead to greater collaboration and knowledge sharing, benefiting both nations’ scientific communities and innovation landscapes.

Backing his innovation narrative with solid numbers, Mr. Goyal also pointed to India’s significant progress in engineering exports. Since 2014, India’s exports in this sector have grown by 60 percent, a remarkable achievement he attributes to the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

India on the rise! Since 2014, under @NarendraModi Govt., engineering goods’ exports have surged by 60 per cent, reflecting robust ‘Make in India’ success,” Goyal posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

This export performance not only demonstrates India’s growing industrial capacity but also affirms the country’s ability to meet global quality standards in engineering and manufacturing.

Reinforcing India’s manufacturing strength, recent data from the Ministry of Statistics showed that industrial production in April 2025 grew by 2.7 percent year-on-year. The manufacturing sector itself registered a 3.4 percent growth, up from 3 percent in March.

Within this, sectors such as basic metals, motor vehicles, and machinery played leading roles. Notably, the manufacture of machinery and equipment grew by an impressive 17 percent, driven by both domestic demand and robust export markets.

The output of capital goods—which are vital for industrial and infrastructure projects—rose sharply by 20.3 percent, indicating a strong uptick in investment activity across industries. This surge is expected to contribute to job creation, long-term income growth, and capacity expansion in key sectors.

Additionally, consumer demand remains healthy. Durable goods like electronics and home appliances saw an output increase of 6.4 percent, indicating sustained purchasing power among Indian consumers.

India’s infrastructure development also plays a pivotal role in this growth story. The infrastructure and construction goods sector grew by 4 percent in April, fueled by large-scale investments in highways, railways, and ports. This public spending continues to boost industrial output and create demand for engineering goods.

With these developments, India is not only strengthening its domestic manufacturing and industrial base but also strategically positioning itself on the global innovation map. Minister Goyal’s vision signals that India is gearing up to become a key player in the global tech and manufacturing ecosystem, supported by policy, infrastructure, talent, and international cooperation.
