Garia Puja, one of the most important religious festivals of the indigenous people of Tripura is being celebrated with enthusiasm and fervour across the state. Though the Garia puja is animist in nature, it was always considered one of the important pujas that belong to larger Hindu pantheon. Many local clubs and Bengali Hindus also this time joined the festival along with the indigenous people. After the BJP- IPFT came to power in 2018 the Tripura government had also announced holidays during the puja.

The Garia puja is celebrated with a decorated bamboo pole that symbolizes Baba Garia. He is considered to be the deity of wealth and livestock. One of the most important rituals of the puja is animal sacrifice especially fowls.

Tripura Sanatani Samaj organised ‘Baba Garia Puja’ at Kshudiram School ground in Agartala on Thursday. A fair was also been organised.

This year as an added attraction sapling distribution and free eye check camps were also organized apart from cultural programs.

Religious flavour and enthusiasm were in air at another puja mandap in Agartala. Netaji club of Ujan Abhoy nagar conducted Garia Puja today. It was the 30th years of observance of Gariya Puja by the club.

Alongwith other parts across the State, indigenous people of Teliamura also took part in the Garia Puja according to the tradition ritualistic practices.

In different hamlets under Teliamura, people are taking ‘Baba Garia’ to every household. Children, young adults and even the elders accompanied the procession with the ‘Baba Garia’ and roamed around the villages. Speaking about the puja, a youth of Teliamura said it is joyful day for the indigenous communities. We pray to Baba Garia and hope that happiness and prosperity will bloom in our lives with HIS blessings.
