Former BJP mandal president Rajkumar Debnath was allegedly assaulted in Charilam following a factional clash over RD office work orders. He lodged a police complaint as internal party rivalry raises concerns over political discipline and law and order.
Tension erupted in Charilam on Thursday after a former BJP mandal president was allegedly assaulted by members of his own party following a heated dispute over the distribution of work orders at the Rural Development (RD) office.
The injured leader, identified as Rajkumar Debnath, former Charilam mandal president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reportedly sought refuge at Bishramganj police station to protect himself from further attack. He was later taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
According to local sources, the incident stemmed from an altercation between two rival factions within the party over the allocation of work orders linked to development projects. The dispute quickly escalated into physical confrontation, exposing deep-rooted divisions within the local party unit.
Residents familiar with the situation stated that the two groups have been at odds for a prolonged period, primarily over business interests and associated political influence in the region. The rivalry has allegedly created repeated tensions, despite intervention efforts by senior party leaders.
Notably, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma have previously urged party workers to end factionalism and maintain unity at the grassroots level. However, the latest incident suggests that internal differences remain unresolved in Charilam.
Following the alleged assault, Debnath lodged a formal complaint at Bishramganj police station, naming three individuals he accused of involvement in the attack. Law enforcement authorities have acknowledged receiving the complaint and are expected to initiate an investigation into the matter.
Expressing strong resentment against the current Charilam mandal leadership, Debnath stated, “I am a former mandal president and a member of the panchayat samiti, yet I am being attacked. No one is safe in Charilam.”
The incident has sparked fresh debate over internal discipline and leadership control within local political units. Political observers believe that if factional conflicts persist, they could affect the party’s organizational strength and public image in the region.
Police officials have not yet released an official statement regarding arrests or further action. Meanwhile, party supporters and local residents are closely watching developments as the situation unfolds.
