The Sepahijala District Forest Department has launched a groundbreaking initiative to safeguard the lives of monkeys in the Sepahijala Sanctuary. In response to the frequent fatalities of monkeys crossing the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway, officials have implemented an innovative solution.
The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce monkey fatalities resulting from vehicular accidents, as stated by forest department officials. Sepahijala is renowned for its population of Spectacled Monkeys, also known as Phayre’s leaf monkeys or Phayre’s langurs.
“Previously, tragic incidents occurred during the monkeys’ attempts to cross the highway, leading to multiple casualties,” an official remarked during a press briefing. “Under the new system, alternative arrangements for the monkeys’ road crossing using ropeways over the road have been put in place. These measures aim to minimize the risk of accidents and enhance the safety of the monkeys,” he added.
By tackling this critical issue, the forest department aims to mitigate the loss of monkey lives and create a safer environment for both wildlife and commuters. The initiative has garnered widespread attention, highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation and responsible road management. With these new arrangements, the death rate of primates in Sepahijala Sanctuary is expected to decrease significantly.
