CPI(M) organized a mass rally in North Tripura’s Kadamtala-Kurti constituency demanding urgent road repairs, rollback of electricity hikes, resumption of MGNREGA work, and activation of panchayat governance. Senior leaders addressed the crowd, emphasizing grassroots unity and warning of intensified agitation if demands go unmet.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), under the Rajnagar Divisional Committee in the 54-Kadamtala-Kurti Assembly constituency, organized a significant rally and public meeting on Saturday to highlight and press for a five-point charter of demands affecting local residents.
The event saw active participation from hundreds of local residents, party supporters, and senior CPI(M) leaders, emphasizing growing public discontent over pressing civic and administrative issues in the region. The rally commenced at 4 PM from Rajnagar Bazaar and concluded with a large market meeting at Piyarachhara Bazaar.
Key Demands Raised
The CPI(M) laid out a five-point charter of demands aimed at addressing core developmental, administrative, and infrastructure concerns in the area:
-
Immediate Repair of the Kadamtala-Ranibari PWD Road:
The dilapidated condition of the Public Works Department (PWD) road between Kadamtala and Ranibari has severely affected daily transportation and economic activities. Local residents, especially farmers and traders, have found it increasingly difficult to access nearby markets and health services due to the poor road condition. -
Withdrawal of Increased Electricity Charges and Cancellation of Smart Meters:
The party strongly opposed the recent hike in electricity tariffs and the imposition of smart electricity meters, claiming these measures place an unfair financial burden on poor and middle-class families. CPI(M) leaders demanded immediate withdrawal of the revised charges and a rollback of the smart meter installations. -
Activation of Administrative Work in Kalagangarpar Panchayat:
Although a Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan have already taken their oath in the Kalagangarpar Panchayat, they have not yet been granted any official responsibilities or authority. CPI(M) leaders alleged administrative negligence and demanded that governance begin without further delay to serve the local population effectively. -
Repair of Several Rural Roads in Kadamtala Block:
Highlighting the connectivity issues in various parts of the Kadamtala block, the CPI(M) called for urgent repair of multiple rural roads that remain in a state of disrepair. Improved infrastructure, they argued, is essential for boosting local agriculture, access to education, and emergency services. -
Resumption of MGNREGA Work:
Leaders noted that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) work has been stalled for an extended period, causing unemployment and hardship among daily wage laborers. The CPI(M) demanded the immediate resumption of work to ensure job security and livelihood support for rural families.
Leadership Presence and Community Mobilization
Senior CPI(M) leaders, including Jaharul Haque, member of the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Committee; Ratan Roy, Sub-Divisional Secretary; and local MLA Islam Uddin, attended the rally and addressed the gathering. The leaders elaborated on each of the demands during the concluding market meeting at Piyarachhara Bazaar.
MLA Islam Uddin stated, “We will not remain silent while our people suffer. These demands are not political; they are essential for the survival and dignity of the people. We urge the administration to respond without delay.”
Ratan Roy emphasized the importance of unity and grassroots mobilization, stating that continued public pressure was the only way to ensure that the authorities take action.
The rally concluded peacefully, but with a strong message of resistance and determination. Party cadres announced that if the demands are not met in a time-bound manner, they will intensify their agitation in the coming weeks.
Public Response
The overwhelming response to the rally indicates that these issues resonate deeply with the public in Kadamtala-Kurti. Many participants expressed frustration over government inaction and affirmed their support for future movements spearheaded by the CPI(M).
