Five Arrested in Assam, three in Tripura for Supporting Pahalgam Attack, Inflammatory Posts

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday reaffirmed the state government’s firm stance against individuals allegedly expressing support or justification for the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which claimed over 20 lives, has drawn nationwide outrage and calls for strict action against those promoting divisive or inflammatory narratives.

nce policy against those who, directly or indirectly, defend or support Pakistan in the wake of this heinous act,” CM Sarma declared, adding that Assam Police has already arrested five individuals in connection with pro-Pakistan content circulated on social media.

Among those arrested is Aminul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), representing the Dhing Assembly constituency in Assam. Islam was taken into custody on Thursday on sedition charges following the emergence of a video clip in which he reportedly described the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks as “government conspiracies.” His comments sparked widespread criticism and led to swift legal action.

The other arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Md. Jabir Hussain (Hailakandi district)

  • Md. A.K. Bahauddin

  • Md. Javed Mazumder (Silchar)

  • Md. Mahahar Mia, alias Md. Mujihirul Islam (Morigaon district)

  • Md. Sahil Ali (Sivasagar district)

“Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, promotes the cause of Pakistan,” Sarma reiterated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Further arrests are underway as part of our ongoing crackdown.”

AIUDF Distances Itself from Controversial MLA

In response to the controversy, AIUDF chief and Lok Sabha MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal issued a statement distancing the party from Islam’s remarks. “AIUDF stands with the government. Terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terror cannot claim to represent Islam,” Ajmal stated.

This isn’t the first time Aminul Islam has found himself embroiled in controversy. In April 2020, he was arrested on similar charges of sedition and promoting communal enmity. That arrest followed the circulation of an audio clip in which Islam allegedly claimed that Covid-19 quarantine centers in Assam were “worse than detention camps” and accused the government of targeting Muslims under the guise of pandemic protocols.

As the Assam government intensifies its clampdown on inflammatory and seditious content, the recent arrests signal a hardening of its security posture in the wake of heightened national security concerns.

Three Arrested in Tripura for Inflammatory Social Media Posts Related to Pahalgam Attack

Authorities in Tripura have arrested three individuals from different parts of the state for allegedly posting inflammatory content on social media in the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

One of the incidents triggered significant unrest in Ambassa, where a retired schoolteacher, Jahar Debnath, was taken into custody after he allegedly posted a provocative message on his personal Facebook profile regarding the Pahalgam incident. Debnath, reportedly linked with the principal opposition party CPI(M), drew public outrage, prompting hundreds of protestors to gather outside his residence, chanting slogans and demanding his arrest.

In response to the escalating tension, police swiftly intervened and arrested Debnath. Another individual, Kuldip Mandal, was also arrested in the same locality under similar charges.

The third arrest was made in the Sonamura Sobhapur area, where a person identified as Jahirul Islam was taken into custody for allegedly posting content that could incite communal discord.

Heightened Surveillance and Prompt Action Ordered

According to official sources, senior police officials across Tripura have been directed to closely monitor online platforms and respond immediately to any posts or messages that could disturb communal harmony. The state’s law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent the spread of misinformation and provocative content in light of heightened national sensitivities following the Pahalgam terror attack.

“Strict instructions have been issued to act without delay against any individual or group found using social media to incite disharmony or spread inflammatory narratives,” a senior police official said.

The recent arrests are part of a broader strategy being implemented by several states to counter digital hate speech and maintain public order amid rising communal tensions nationwide.
