ECI Holds Interaction with BSP, Emphasizes Strengthening Stakeholder Engagement

The Election Commission of India (ECI), under its ongoing initiative to deepen stakeholder engagement, held a significant interaction today with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) at Nirvachan Sadan. The meeting was attended by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Oyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhi and Dr. Vivek Joshi. The BSP delegation was led by its National President, Kumari Mayawati.

The meeting is part of the Commission’s newly reinvigorated effort to facilitate open, structured, and consistent dialogue with national and state political parties. Through these interactions, the ECI aims to create a platform where political parties can directly communicate their concerns, suggestions, and feedback on electoral processes and reforms.

A detailed press note (vide No. ECI/PN/209/2025) released by the Commission outlined that this strategic engagement marks a continuation of its larger vision of enhancing the transparency, inclusivity, and effectiveness of the democratic process, within the framework of existing electoral laws.

The ECI stated that these consultations are not one-off events but part of a regular series designed to foster a collaborative atmosphere between the Commission and registered political entities. By opening these channels, the Commission intends to address long-pending demands for more participatory mechanisms in election management.

According to the press note, the ECI has, over time, conducted a total of 4,719 all-party meetings as part of this inclusive engagement effort. This includes:

  • 40 high-level meetings conducted by Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs),

  • 800 district-level consultations by District Election Officers (DEOs),

  • 3,879 meetings held by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs).

These meetings have collectively involved more than 28,000 representatives from various political parties across India, demonstrating the scale and reach of the Commission’s consultative approach.

Today’s meeting with the Bahujan Samaj Party reportedly covered a range of electoral issues. While the specific points raised by Kumari Mayawati’s delegation have not yet been officially disclosed, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to reviewing and considering all inputs provided by political parties as part of its continuous improvement of electoral practices.

The ECI emphasized that such engagements are crucial not only for addressing party-specific concerns but also for receiving valuable suggestions on systemic reforms, voter outreach initiatives, electoral roll management, and the use of technology in elections.

In a time when electoral trust and transparency are pivotal to democratic resilience, the Election Commission’s move to institutionalize party interactions reflects a proactive shift towards participatory governance in the election space.
