Doctors at Bishramganj PHC successfully perform a rare twin delivery under challenging conditions, saving a mother and her newborn twins and highlighting the strength of rural healthcare services despite limited resources.
In a remarkable demonstration of medical dedication under limited resources, doctors at the Bishramganj Primary Health Centre (PHC) successfully conducted a rare twin delivery late Friday night, ensuring the safety of both the mother and her newborn babies. The incident has drawn praise from local residents and highlighted the critical role of rural healthcare institutions.
The patient, Indrakanya Debbarma (35), a resident of Banshihari under Sutarmaura, was admitted to the Bishramganj PHC at around 11:45 p.m. after experiencing severe labour pain. She was accompanied by her family members, who immediately sought medical attention. Considering the complications and the intensity of labour, the attending doctors initially advised shifting her to the Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
However, due to acute financial hardship, the family expressed their inability to bear the cost of transportation and treatment at a tertiary healthcare facility. Taking the family’s condition into account, the medical team at Bishramganj PHC decided to proceed with the delivery locally, despite the challenges involved.
Shortly after midnight, Indrakanya delivered a healthy baby boy weighing approximately 3 kilograms. While the family and staff believed the delivery process had concluded successfully, a follow-up medical examination revealed an unexpected complication — the presence of another baby in the womb. The situation immediately became critical, as no prior sonography had been conducted during the pregnancy.
Displaying exceptional calm and professional expertise, Dr. Debbir Das led the emergency procedure for the second delivery. With the support of senior nurse Purabi Debnath and other healthcare staff, the medical team safely delivered a second baby boy weighing around 2.5 kilograms. Both newborns cried immediately after birth, indicating healthy conditions.
Speaking to reporters later, Dr. Das confirmed that the mother and both infants are stable and under continuous medical observation. “Despite the absence of prior ultrasound reports, our team acted swiftly and responsibly to ensure a safe outcome,” he said.

The family expressed deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and health workers of Bishramganj PHC for their tireless efforts. Relatives stated that the medical team not only saved lives but also restored hope during a moment of despair.
Local residents noted that Bishramganj PHC has previously handled similar critical cases successfully, strengthening its reputation as a dependable healthcare center in rural areas, even with limited infrastructure.
