Dharmanagar witnesses massive protests after delivery boy Prasenjit Sarkar’s suicide. Protesters demand arrests over public humiliation linked to a viral video. Police assure swift action as investigation intensifies and public anger grows.

Public anger escalated sharply in Dharmanagar after the tragic death of a young delivery boy, with hundreds of protesters storming the local police station demanding immediate arrests and justice. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, raising serious questions about public humiliation, cyber shaming, and delayed law enforcement response.

The protest erupted after 23-year-old delivery worker Prasenjit Sarkar was found hanging from a tree near his residence on Sunday morning. Locals believe the young man took the extreme step following a public humiliation incident allegedly linked to an online delivery dispute that occurred just a day earlier.

According to eyewitnesses and protest organizers, a large group of agitated citizens marched from the Netaji statue area in the evening, carrying placards and shouting slogans seeking justice for the deceased. The procession later reached Dharmanagar Police Station, where protesters attempted to forcibly enter the premises, creating a tense situation.

Police personnel deployed at the station blocked the protesters from entering, preventing further escalation. The demonstrators accused the police of maintaining a “conspicuous silence” and alleged inaction, stating that more than three days had passed since Prasenjit’s death without any arrests.

A delegation of protesters was later allowed to meet Officer-in-Charge Mina Debbarma, where they submitted a memorandum and issued a 12-hour ultimatum demanding immediate arrest of all accused persons named in the complaint.

Speaking to the media, one of the protest leaders demanded direct intervention from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, urging the government to provide either a government job or financial compensation to the bereaved family. He warned that failure to act within the stipulated time would result in larger and more aggressive protests across the subdivision.

The protester further stated that Prasenjit’s death was not an isolated incident but a reflection of growing social intolerance and unchecked public shaming. “If justice is delayed, it will send a dangerous message to society,” he said.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, Avinash Rai, assured that the investigation was progressing swiftly. He stated that searches were already underway and that several individuals had been called for interrogation in connection with the case.

“The police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. All accused persons will be arrested based on evidence. No one involved will be spared,” SP Rai told reporters, seeking calm and cooperation from the public.

According to preliminary investigation details, Prasenjit Sarkar was allegedly subjected to severe public humiliation during an altercation over an online delivery issue. A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the young man being verbally abused and forced to perform sit-ups while holding his ears, despite repeatedly apologizing.

The video sparked widespread condemnation online, with netizens calling the act degrading and inhumane. Many believe that the viral circulation of the footage deeply traumatized Prasenjit, ultimately pushing him toward suicide.

The victim’s family has lodged a formal complaint at Dharmanagar Police Station, naming five individuals—Susmita Bhattacharjee, Sangeeta Bhattacharjee, Sourav Bhattacharjee, Meghadip Bhattacharjee, and Piu Dhar—accusing them of harassment, mental torture, and abetment leading to suicide.

Family members described Prasenjit as a hardworking and soft-spoken youth who took up delivery work to support his household. “He was shattered after the incident. The humiliation broke him,” a relative said, demanding strict punishment for those responsible.

The incident has reignited debates on online vigilantism, mob behavior, and the psychological toll of viral shaming. Social activists have called for stricter laws against public humiliation and faster police intervention in cases involving viral abuse.

As tension continues to simmer in Dharmanagar, authorities have increased police presence in sensitive areas to prevent further unrest. All eyes are now on the police investigation and whether timely action will bring justice to the grieving family.
