Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta discussed the Assembly’s digital transformation under NeVA. The move includes a paperless legislature, solar power project, and heritage site development. These initiatives aim to enhance transparency, sustainability, and preserve Delhi’s rich democratic and architectural legacy.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta met on Tuesday to deliberate over key initiatives aimed at modernising the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The discussion focused on the Assembly’s ongoing digital transformation and sustainable infrastructure developments, setting the stage for a significant shift in how legislative affairs are conducted in the capital.

During the meeting, Speaker Gupta informed the Home Minister about the digitisation of the Assembly under the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) framework. This initiative aims to convert the Delhi Assembly into a fully paperless legislature, significantly enhancing transparency, streamlining administrative processes, and fostering efficient communication among lawmakers.

Gupta emphasised that this digital transformation aligns with the central government’s Digital India vision and is intended to bring about a smarter, more accountable legislative system. “Our goal is to create a fully digital Assembly that operates with maximum efficiency while ensuring accessibility and transparency for every stakeholder,” he stated.

In addition to the digital initiative, Gupta also briefed HM Shah on the implementation of a 500-kilowatt Solar Power Project within the Assembly complex. The project is designed to make the legislative premises entirely solar-powered, reinforcing the Assembly’s commitment to sustainable governance. The move is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the institution and promote eco-friendly practices within the public sector.

“This solar project is a reflection of our environmental responsibility. The Assembly aims to set an example for other institutions to follow,” Gupta remarked.

Moreover, the Speaker shared his vision of transforming the Delhi Legislative Assembly into a Living Heritage Site. Highlighting its architectural grandeur and historical significance, Gupta noted that the Assembly building, constructed in 1912, stands as a symbol of democratic heritage. He proposed that the structure be preserved and showcased as a centre for civic education and cultural engagement.

The plan envisions a comprehensive development model that retains the building’s historical essence while integrating state-of-the-art facilities. “Our vision is to preserve the building’s historical identity while making it a dynamic hub for public learning and democratic engagement,” Gupta said.

Support for the heritage initiative has already begun to materialise. Last month, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat expressed his ministry’s readiness to collaborate on the project. In a formal letter addressed to Speaker Gupta, Shekhawat wrote: “The Delhi Assembly Building is a significant landmark that not only represents the rich political legacy of our nation but also stands as an enduring symbol of architectural and historical value. Your proposal to develop the campus as a vibrant heritage hub is both timely and appropriate.”

Shekhawat also affirmed his commitment to preserving the cultural and architectural identity of the Assembly and declared it a site of national importance. “We look forward to working in close collaboration with your office to preserve this historical edifice and unlock its full cultural potential for the people of Delhi and the nation,” the letter read.

This exchange of correspondence follows an earlier meeting on June 3, where Speaker Gupta met Shekhawat to discuss the Assembly’s heritage potential. The Speaker had also formally written to the Union Minister on May 13, proposing the transformation of the century-old building into a nationally recognised heritage centre.

As the Delhi Assembly continues to embrace digital innovation and sustainability while honouring its storied past, these initiatives mark a forward-looking chapter in the evolution of one of the country’s most prominent legislative institutions.
