Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma launches ‘Mission BTR’ in Kokrajhar, asserting BJP’s dominance ahead of BTC polls. He claims Congress has no foothold in Bodoland and promises development after peace. BJP eyes wins in BTC elections and 2026 Assam polls with a strong focus on stability and welfare.

In a politically charged move ahead of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) new campaign, “Mission BTR,” with the aim of consolidating the party’s grip over the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). The five-day tour kicked off on Monday with a grand rally at the Green Field ground in Kokrajhar, the administrative headquarters of BTR.

Addressing a large gathering of supporters and party workers, Sarma delivered a fiery speech that positioned the BJP as the dominant political force in the region. He took a sharp dig at the Congress party, stating, “Congress has no presence here. Congress belongs in Pakistan.” The remark, though controversial, was met with loud cheers from the crowd, reflecting the combative mood of the ruling party as it prepares for a high-stakes election season.

Stability and Peace Post-Peace Accord

Highlighting the BJP-led government’s achievements in the region, Sarma noted the significant progress in restoring peace following the 2020 BTR peace accord. “The last five years were about establishing peace – no encounters, no bomb blasts. We have ensured stability in the region, and now it’s time to take the next step,” he said.

He promised that the coming years would focus on comprehensive development for all communities living in BTR. “Our vision for the next five years is development – inclusive and all-round. Every ethnic group, every community will benefit,” Sarma added.

A Two-Pronged Political Strategy

The Chief Minister outlined the BJP’s clear political roadmap: winning the BTC elections decisively and building momentum for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. “We are not here to lose. We are here to win — for peace, for development, and for the welfare of every person in BTR,” he asserted.

Sarma was joined on stage by prominent BJP leaders including state party president Dilip Saikia, Minister Ashok Singhal, and senior BTC functionaries. Their presence underscored the importance the BJP is placing on the region, which has long been politically sensitive and strategically vital.

He added, “After BTC, we shift our focus fully to 2026. Our mission is clear — to return to power in Assam with an even stronger mandate.”

Mission BTR: A Development-Centric Agenda

Later in the day, Sarma chaired a high-level review meeting at the Kokrajhar District Commissioner’s office. The meeting was aimed at assessing the implementation of various state welfare schemes in the region. Officials provided updates on progress in sectors like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and rural development.

Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches the grassroots. “Mission BTR is not just a slogan. It’s a commitment to uplift this region and transform the lives of its people,” he said.

The BJP’s push for a development narrative is seen as a move to consolidate support across ethnic and tribal communities in the BTR. The region has historically witnessed ethnic tensions, and the peace accord was a significant step in bringing stability. With that foundation, the BJP now aims to become the dominant political force by promising sustained growth.

Congress Under Fire

The Chief Minister’s stinging attack on the Congress reflects a broader BJP strategy of marginalising opposition parties in the region. By claiming that Congress has “no foothold” in Bodoland, Sarma seeks to portray the party as irrelevant in the current political landscape.

Political analysts see “Mission BTR” as a tactical move to build momentum and enthusiasm among party cadres. The BJP has already established a strong presence in the BTR, and this campaign could be the next big step in fully consolidating that influence.

Looking Ahead

As Assam moves toward the BTC elections, the stakes are high for all major parties. However, with “Mission BTR,” the BJP has signaled its intent to dominate the narrative — focusing on development, peace, and welfare while pushing opposition parties further to the sidelines.
