BJP and Tipra Motha hold high-level talks in Agartala to finalise seat-sharing for the upcoming Village Committee elections. Leaders from both parties discuss proportional representation across blocks, with a formal announcement on the alliance arrangement expected Monday morning.
High-level discussions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Tipra Motha Party are underway in Agartala to finalise a seat-sharing arrangement ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections in Tripura.
A crucial closed-door meeting between leaders of the two parties was held on Sunday evening at a private hotel in the state capital. The discussions continued late into the night as both sides worked to reach an understanding over the distribution of seats across different blocks.
According to a senior Tipra Motha functionary present at the meeting, negotiations were still underway and several important issues related to the upcoming Village Committee elections were being discussed.
The BJP delegation was led by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath. Ministers Tinku Roy and Sushanta Chowdhury also participated in the meeting, along with BJP leaders including Vice-President Uttara Debbarma and General Secretary Bipin Debbarma.
Representing Tipra Motha were TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai, Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma and other senior party leaders, including MDC Purnachandra Jamatia.
Sources said that seat distribution was among the key issues discussed during the meeting. The BJP has reportedly sought proportional representation in each and every block as part of the proposed seat-sharing arrangement. The demand is expected to be a major component of the ongoing negotiations between the two parties.
The meeting assumes significance as the BJP and Tipra Motha, which have been political allies in Tripura, seek to coordinate their electoral strategy for the Village Committee polls. The proposed seat-sharing formula is expected to determine how candidates from both parties will contest across different areas.
The discussions also come amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the local-level elections. Leaders from both sides are expected to continue consultations to resolve outstanding issues and arrive at a mutually acceptable formula.
Although no official agreement was announced immediately, sources indicated that a formal announcement regarding the seat-sharing arrangement could be made on Monday morning.
