MP Biplab Kumar Deb has demanded a Rs 100-crore central package in Lok Sabha for the development of Unakoti in Tripura, citing its spiritual and archaeological value. He also called for relocating the ASI office from Mizoram to Tripura to ensure better site management and infrastructure development.
In a parliamentary intervention aimed at bolstering Tripura’s tourism and cultural heritage, West Tripura Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday demanded a central package of Rs 100 crore for the development of Unakoti, one of the state’s most iconic historical and spiritual sites.
Addressing the Lok Sabha during a special session, Deb strongly advocated for the conservation, restoration, and overall infrastructural upliftment of Unakoti, a site managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and known for its ancient rock carvings dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries.
“Unakoti is not just a tourist destination; it is a sacred land deeply connected to the Sanatan faith and Indic spirituality,” Deb stated during his speech. “Its rich history, marked by unique rock-cut sculptures and mythological symbols, makes it a national treasure. However, due to administrative inefficiency, its preservation is under threat.”
Deb pointed out that the current administrative structure overseeing Unakoti has proven ineffective, as the ASI office responsible for its maintenance is located in Mizoram. He called for an immediate shift of the ASI regional office to Tripura to streamline operations and avoid further bureaucratic delays.
“Most archaeological sites under the jurisdiction of this ASI office are situated in Tripura. Yet, they are being managed from Mizoram, which results in miscommunication and negligence. This office must be relocated to Tripura to ensure better site management,” Deb asserted.
The MP laid out a comprehensive infrastructure development plan to support the growing influx of tourists to the site. His proposal includes the widening and renovation of the road connecting National Highway 208 to Unakoti, ensuring smoother and safer access for visitors. He also called for extensive landscaping in and around the heritage site to enhance its visual appeal and environmental sustainability.
To improve tourist amenities, Deb suggested the construction of an open-air theatre and public assembly venue to host cultural programs and educational events related to the site’s history. Additionally, the development plan envisions the establishment of modern facilities such as souvenir shops, cafeterias, clean public restrooms, and rest houses to accommodate tourists.
Deb emphasized that Unakoti’s development must go beyond basic conservation. “The site has the potential to emerge as a globally recognized spiritual and cultural tourism destination. But for that, we need robust infrastructure and dedicated administrative oversight,” he said.
The demand for Rs 100 crore in central assistance is intended to support both the preservation of the ancient rock carvings and sculptures, and to provide the necessary infrastructure to handle the growing number of domestic and international visitors. Deb urged the Union Minister of Culture to treat this request as a matter of national importance.
Unakoti, located in the Unakoti district of northern Tripura, is often referred to as the “Angkor Wat of the East” for its monolithic rock carvings. Despite its archaeological significance, the site has received limited attention from central authorities over the years, leading to gradual decay and inadequate facilities for tourists.
Experts and heritage conservationists have long been calling for better management of Unakoti, and Deb’s intervention in Parliament could mark a turning point in the state’s efforts to preserve and promote this cultural gem.
