Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh and Tripura DGP Anurag have been empanelled for Director General posts in central forces, as approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Both seasoned IPS officers bring decades of diverse experience, marking a significant step toward national-level leadership in Indian policing.
In a administrative development, Director Generals of Police (DGPs) from Manipur and Tripura — Rajiv Singh and Anurag respectively — have been empanelled for appointment to the post of Director General (DG) in central armed police forces. This was officially confirmed on Wednesday by senior officials, following a decision by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The Cabinet Committee has approved the empanelment of 35 senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the 1993 and 1994 batches for DG or equivalent level posts in the central government. These officers hail from various state cadres and have been recognised for their substantial administrative and operational track records.
Rajiv Singh: A Journey from Tripura Cadre to Manipur DGP
Rajiv Singh, a 1993 batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, is currently serving as the Director General of Police in Manipur. His appointment came amid intense ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023. He replaced P. Doungel at a critical time when law and order in the state were under severe stress.

Before taking over as Manipur DGP, Singh served as the Additional Director General of Tripura Police. He also held important central assignments, notably as Inspector General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). His extensive experience both at the state and central levels played a vital role in handling conflict and restoring order in Manipur.
Anurag: Decorated Tripura Officer with Rich National and International Experience
Anurag, a 1994 batch IPS officer from the Tripura cadre, was appointed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura in May 2024, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. With around 16 years of service in Tripura across multiple stints, Anurag brings deep insight into the state’s policing challenges and strategic needs.
His long and diverse career includes tenures as:
-
SDPO, Longtharai Valley
-
District SP for undivided West and South Tripura
-
SP, Special Branch
-
AIGP (Headquarters)
On the central deputation front, Anurag has made his mark in top investigative and policy roles. Between 2005 and 2013, he served as SP and later DIG in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He also held key positions such as:
-
IG, Bureau of Police Research and Development
-
IG (Personnel), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
-
Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI
Anurag’s international exposure includes a tenure with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003–04, and he also headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Ministry of Home Affairs. For his service, he has received both the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
In recent roles, Anurag served as Tripura’s ADGP (Law and Order) and was promoted to DGP (Intelligence) in January 2024, indicating the state’s trust in his capability to manage internal security effectively.
Implications of the Empanelment
The empanelment of both officers underlines the central government’s strategy to place experienced and decorated police officers in key leadership roles across Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and other vital national security institutions. Their appointment would bring seasoned expertise to national policing and intelligence frameworks.

With this recognition, both Rajiv Singh and Anurag are now eligible for direct appointments as DGs in paramilitary forces such as CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, and others. Their elevation would not only mark a personal milestone but also reflect positively on the northeastern region’s contribution to national security leadership.
