CPI(M) protests in Bishalgarh over alleged illegal arms stockpile, accusing police inaction, rising gang violence, and political terror. Leaders demand urgent intervention to restore law, order, and public safety amid growing fear among residents.
Tensions escalated in Bishalgarh on Thursday as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) staged a strong protest, alleging a growing stockpile of illegal arms and a complete breakdown of law and order in the region.
Led by the CPI(M) Bishalgarh Subdivision Committee, party workers marched from their local office to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) headquarters, voicing serious concerns over what they described as a dangerous rise in armed criminal activity. In a symbolic act of dissent, the protesters hung an open memorandum at the office gate, demanding immediate intervention from authorities.
The memorandum painted a grim picture of the situation on the ground, claiming that residents are living under constant fear as armed groups reportedly roam the streets in broad daylight. According to the statement, incidents of violence, intimidation, and illegal activities have become routine, severely impacting normal life in the area.
The CPI(M) accused both the police and the civil administration of failing in their duties. “Police have become puppets, administration is absent,” the memorandum stated, alleging that illegal arms circulation, looting, political violence, gang wars, and drug trafficking have pushed Bishalgarh into chaos. The party urged authorities to take swift action to restore peace, democracy, and the safety of citizens.
Party leaders further alleged that the situation has deteriorated significantly since the 2018 change in government in Tripura. They claimed that what they termed “semi-fascist terror” has taken root in the region, targeting opposition supporters. According to CPI(M) figures, at least two party workers have been killed, more than 500 individuals assaulted, and numerous homes, shops, and party offices vandalized or destroyed over the past few years.
Despite filing multiple complaints, the party alleges that law enforcement agencies have failed to conduct proper investigations or take meaningful action. CPI(M) leaders suggested that political pressure and influence have hindered the functioning of the police, allowing perpetrators to operate with impunity.
Highlighting recent incidents, demonstrators pointed to alleged gang clashes linked to contraband activities, as well as reported shootings targeting CPI(M) workers’ residences. They also referred to recent arrests of individuals allegedly linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who were reportedly caught with firearms in separate incidents in Champamura and near Agartala railway station earlier this week.
The protestors warned that Bishalgarh is rapidly descending into lawlessness, with businesses shutting down early and families avoiding stepping out after dark due to safety concerns. Local markets, they said, are witnessing declining footfall as fear grips the community.
CPI(M) leaders called on the state government to take immediate and decisive action to curb illegal arms circulation and restore public confidence. They emphasized the need for impartial policing, thorough investigations, and strict enforcement of the law to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

As tensions continue to simmer, all eyes are now on the administration’s response to the allegations. The developments in Bishalgarh have once again brought the issue of law and order in Tripura into sharp focus, raising questions about governance, political accountability, and public safety in the state.
