CPI(M) Party Congress Returns to Madurai

Must Read

The 24th Party Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) began in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, with senior leader Biman Bose raising the party flag at the historic Tamukkam Ground, a site rich in the party’s legacy. Red flags and celebratory decorations adorn the city, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and pride among CPI(M) members.
Madurai holds a special place in the party’s history, having previously hosted the 3rd Congress of the united Communist Party of India in 1953 and the 9th Congress of the CPI(M) in 1972. With the current gathering, the city becomes the first in India to host three CPI(M) Party Congresses.
The event will be inaugurated by CPI(M) Politburo Coordinator Prakash Karat, with former Tripura Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar chairing the session. Prominent left-wing leaders, including CPI General Secretary D. Raja and representatives from allied parties, will address the delegates.
One of the standout features of the Congress is a seminar on federalism, co-hosted by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Running until April 6, the Congress will also see major leadership transitions. Seven senior leaders will retire due to the party’s age policy, though Pinarayi Vijayan, at 79, will continue in the Politburo with a special exemption.
A new General Secretary will be selected during the Congress, with senior leaders M.A. Baby and Ashok Dhawale considered to be the key contenders. Cultural performances and participation from noted artists and filmmakers, including Vijay Sethupathi and Vetrimaran, add a unique dimension to the event.
For the first time, a real-time translation system is being used to overcome language barriers among delegates, alongside digital tools for report presentations. With delegates from across India attending, the Congress reaffirms the CPI(M)’s commitment to adapting modern technologies and fostering inclusivity.
In Tamil Nadu, CPI(M) functions as an ally of the ruling DMK, with representation in Parliament and the State Assembly, highlighting its active political role in the region.
