The Union government has agreed to extend the last date of rehabilitation of the displaced Brus in Tripura. The Union government’s decision came following Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s request to the Union Home Minister Amit Shana during his present Delhi visit.

Officials said, in the meeting, the Union Home Minister reviewed the status of resettlement of Bru families in Tripura. He expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the State Government so far.

The Union Home Minister, the release said, accepted the Tripura Chief Minister’s proposal and gave in-principle approval for extension of timeline for completion of resettlement process and to continue extending financial assistance to the Bru families.

In accordance with the quadripartite agreement signed between the Union government,  Tripura government, Mizoram government and displaced Bru leaders, as many as 37,136 Bru people of 6,959 families from seven Relief camps in North Tripura district were to be rehabilitated in twelve new locations as identified by the Tripura government.

The twelve identified locations are- Bongaphapara (L.T. Valley) and Haduklaupara (Ambassa) in Dhalai district, Kaskau (in-situ) of Ambassa and Wainbukcherra- Ranipara of Panisagar in North Tripura, West Kalajhari (Amarpur) in Gomati, Bhandarima- Pushporampara of Kanchanpur, Hamsapara (in-situ) and Khakchang (in-situ) of Panisagar in North Tripura, Ultacherra of Gandacherra in Dhalai district, Gachirampara of Kanchanpur in North Tripura, Shilacherra of Karbook in Gomati and Kala Lawgang of Santirbazar in South Tripura.

However, there were some problems as many local residents opposed the resettlement of the Bru tribes men in and around their locality as it would put unexpected and uncontrolled pressure on the natural resources and also upset and unsettle the socio-economic equilibrium.
