CBI arrested proclaimed offender Sanjit Chakraborty in Kolkata for alleged involvement in two Tripura chit fund scam cases worth over Rs 7.75 crore. The accused had reportedly evaded arrest since 2013 and will be brought to Tripura after transit court procedures.

A major breakthrough has been achieved in the long-pending Tripura chit fund scam investigations after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a proclaimed offender allegedly linked to financial fraud cases involving more than Rs 7.75 crore.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Sanjit Chakraborty, was apprehended in Kolkata on May 12 following extensive surveillance and intelligence-based operations carried out by the investigating agency. Chakraborty, who served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Cosmic Negociators Pvt Ltd, had reportedly been absconding for over a decade.

The CBI stated that Chakraborty was chargesheeted in two separate cases connected to alleged cheating, criminal conspiracy, and misappropriation of public investments collected through chit fund operations in Tripura. Investigators said he had remained untraceable since 2013 and was officially declared an absconding accused in both charge sheets filed by the agency.

Officials revealed that the first chargesheet was submitted in 2015 in connection with an alleged fraud amounting to nearly Rs 7.48 crore. The second chargesheet, filed in 2024, involved another alleged financial irregularity worth approximately Rs 27.13 lakh. Combined, the two cases involve alleged scams exceeding Rs 7.75 crore.

The cases were initially registered by Tripura Police in 2013 after complaints surfaced regarding large-scale financial fraud and non-payment of investors’ money. Later, following notifications issued by both the Tripura government and the Central government under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the investigations were transferred to the CBI for further probe.

In its official statement, the agency said the accused had continuously evaded arrest and remained in hiding for several years. After sustained efforts involving field verification, technical monitoring, and physical surveillance, investigators managed to trace his location in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The arrest operation was conducted after the CBI gathered crucial inputs regarding the movement and whereabouts of the accused. Officials described the development as a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring those involved in financial fraud cases to justice.

The agency further informed that Chakraborty would be produced before a competent court in Kolkata to obtain a transit warrant before being brought to Tripura for further legal proceedings and interrogation.

The arrest is expected to provide fresh momentum to the investigation into chit fund-related frauds in the northeastern state. Thousands of small investors across Tripura were allegedly affected by the collapse of multiple deposit schemes that promised high returns and later failed to repay deposited amounts.
