Caught Between Borders: A Bangladeshi Woman’s Ordeal in Tripura
What began as a desperate journey across borders in search of safety or opportunity has turned into a traumatic and deeply disturbing ordeal for a young Bangladeshi woman now stranded in India and pleading to return home.

According to reports, the woman, whose name is being withheld for her protection, crossed into Indian territory illegally on January 29, 2025. Her entry was detected soon after, and she was apprehended at a railway station by local security personnel. She was taken into custody and charged under relevant laws for unlawful entry.
Following legal procedures, the court eventually granted her bail. However, what should have been a path to freedom turned into another form of confinement—this time within the walls of the jail, where she remained for nearly five months. The reason? No one came forward to stand as a guarantor or provide the surety required for her release. For a woman alone in a foreign land with no friends, family, or connections, the courtroom’s decision was meaningless without someone to help.
Then came Somnath Mondal, a man whose sudden appearance changed the course of events—though not in the way she had hoped. Somnath came forward to post her bail and took her out of jail. For the first time in months, she saw the sky outside prison walls. But that momentary relief was short-lived. According to the woman’s formal complaint later filed with the West Agartala Police Station, her release was followed by a chain of unsettling incidents that led her to fear for her safety once again.
The woman alleged that while traveling in an auto-rickshaw with Somnath shortly after her release, she overheard him speaking on the phone. Though she did not understand the full conversation, the tone and some specific words made her deeply anxious. She suspected that he might be planning to traffic or sell her. Terrified, she demanded that the auto stop. When she tried to get out, she claims Somnath physically assaulted her inside the vehicle, attempting to stop her escape.
Summoning courage and strength, the woman managed to flee and later reached West Agartala Police Station. There, she narrated her ordeal to the authorities and filed a formal complaint against Somnath Mondal. In her statement, she expressed grave concern for her safety and made an emotional plea to be allowed to return to Bangladesh.
Police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint and confirmed that a detailed investigation is now underway. “We are verifying the facts and will act based on the evidence that emerges,” a police officer . Authorities are also examining the possibility of a human trafficking angle, especially given the pattern of events and the vulnerability of the complainant.
Meanwhile, the woman has been provided temporary protection and shelter, but her future remains uncertain. Officials have yet to confirm if and when she will be repatriated to Bangladesh, a process that involves multiple agencies and diplomatic coordination. However, her request to return has added urgency to the proceedings.
This case has once again brought into focus the dangers and vulnerabilities faced by undocumented migrants—particularly women—who often leave their homes under distress, only to find themselves caught in a web of legal complications, social isolation, and potential exploitation in foreign lands.
Human rights activists in the region have expressed concern. “This is not an isolated incident,” said a member of a local NGO. The state must ensure her safety and her right to return home with dignity.”
For now, the woman waits—caught between borders, between fear and hope. She crossed over in search of a better life. What she found instead was betrayal, abuse, and the desperate need to return to where she came from—not because it was perfect, but because at least it was familiar.
