Ending a long wait and speculations Election Commission of India has announced that the by-elections for the vacant seats of Dhanpur and Boxanagar, both in the Sonamura subdivision are scheduled to take place on September 5th. Providing a comprehensive plan for the electoral process, the Commission has laid out a detailed poll schedule. Along with these two seats some other constituencies in other states also will go to by polls.
The Dhanpur assembly constituency’s by-election was necessitated by the resignation of the BJP’s victorious candidate, Pratima Bhowmik, who also serves as a union minister of state for social justice and empowerment. Similarly, the Boxanagar seat, previously held by CPM’s monority leader Shamsul Haque, was left vacant due to his death recently.
The sequence of events leading up to the by-elections is as follows:
-
August 10: The formal notification for the upcoming by-elections will be officially issued by the Election Commission.
-
August 17: Aspiring candidates will have until this date to file their nomination papers.
-
August 18: The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be carried out to ensure compliance with electoral regulations.
-
August 21: The last date for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
-
Period between nomination withdrawal and September 5: During this time, candidates will engage in vigorous campaign activities to garner support from voters.
-
September 5: The formal election will take place, allowing citizens to cast their votes to fill the vacant seats.
-
September 8: The counting of ballots will be undertaken, culminating in the announcement of the winners.
This by-election holds immense political significance for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as it presents an opportunity to expand their presence in the assembly.
As the election commission announced the poll date, all political parties are now shifting their focus towards the crucial task of selecting candidates for both seats.
