In 1971 when Bangladesh Liberation War broke out Tripura played a key role and acted as a hub of freedom movement of the neighbouring nation. While there were more than 15 lakhs refugees in the state, there were also thousands of Bangladeshi Mukti yuddhas as well as Indian soldiers, who were after their supreme sacrifice in the battlefields laid to rest here.
Now, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come out with an ambitious plan to preserve and the cemeteries where the Mukti Yuddhas or Indian soldiers martyred in 1971 War were buried.
Mayor Dipak Majumde along with local MLA Surajit Dutta, corporator and other officials visited the burial site at South Joynagar located near the Indo-Bangla international boundary.
After inspection, the delegation held a meeting with the local community heads and discussed several matters regarding the improvement of the graveyard.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor said, “the graveyard at South Joynagar is linked with the history of 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Mass burial of the Mukti Yuddhas, who were martyred in the freedom movement, was done in the graveyard. It’s our responsibility to preserve it.”
He said, fencing would be erected in the surroundings of the graveyard and a road near the burial site would also be developed for the comfort of the local people. Besides, drinking water facility would be arranged, the Mayor told the media.
“This area is largely populated by Muslim people. Both the Hindu and Muslim families living in the area share a strong bond. As a result, no incident of any communal unrest has taken place in this area till today,” Majumder added.
