BJP announces a new 34-member state committee in West Bengal ahead of Assembly elections. The reshuffle includes vice-presidents, general secretaries, and Morcha heads, signaling a strategic organisational push under state president Samik Bhattacharya.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced a 34-member new state committee for West Bengal, marking a significant organisational reshuffle ahead of the crucial Assembly elections scheduled later this year. The move is being seen as part of the party’s broader strategy to strengthen its organisational base, sharpen electoral preparedness, and balance experience with emerging leadership within the state unit.

Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya, who was elected as the BJP’s West Bengal state president last year, will continue to lead the party’s state unit. Under his leadership, the newly constituted committee aims to streamline organisational functioning while simultaneously gearing up for an intense electoral battle in one of the BJP’s most politically challenging states.

According to the official announcement, the 34-member committee includes 12 vice-presidents, five general secretaries, 12 secretaries, one treasurer, two joint treasurers, one office secretary, and one joint office secretary. The composition reflects a carefully planned structure designed to distribute responsibilities across organisational, political, and electoral domains.

The announcement of the new committee coincided with the arrival of BJP national president and Union Minister for Health, J.P. Nadda, in Kolkata on Wednesday night. Nadda is scheduled to chair a crucial meeting of the new state committee on Thursday afternoon, during which he is expected to outline the party’s roadmap for the upcoming Assembly elections. Party insiders believe the meeting will focus on booth-level strengthening, coordination between organisational and legislative wings, and outreach to key voter segments.

Among the 12 vice-presidents, several prominent leaders have been included. These include former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and former Lok Sabha member Nishith Pramanik, fashion designer-turned-politician and BJP legislator Agnimitra Paul, Lok Sabha member Manoj Tigga, party legislator Dipak Burman, and journalist-turned-politician Jagannath Chattopadhyay. Their inclusion signals the party’s intent to combine administrative experience, legislative presence, and public outreach capabilities.

The five general secretaries also feature notable names. Lok Sabha members Saumitra Khan and Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato have been given key organisational responsibilities, along with former Lok Sabha member and actress-turned-politician Locket Chatterjee. Party sources said the general secretaries will play a central role in coordinating between the state leadership, district units, and the national leadership.

In the list of secretaries, the inclusion of Shankar Ghosh, the Chief Whip of the BJP’s legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly, is being viewed as a move to ensure closer coordination between the organisation and the legislative wing. This alignment is expected to help the party project a more cohesive political strategy both inside and outside the Assembly.

Alongside the state committee, the BJP also announced the heads of three major affiliated Morchas, or mass organisations, in West Bengal. Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu has been appointed as the chair of the Scheduled Tribe Morcha, highlighting the party’s continued focus on tribal outreach. Dr Indranil Khan, a medical practitioner, has been given charge of the Yuva Morcha, reflecting an emphasis on youth mobilisation. Falguni Patra has been named the head of the Mahila Morcha, while Ali Hossain will lead the Minority Morcha, indicating a targeted approach toward women and minority communities.

A senior party leader, who is also a member of both the old and new state committees, said the restructuring was guided by two key principles. “The first is maintaining a balance between experienced leaders who have been with the party for a long time and those who joined at a later stage. The second is ensuring that elected public representatives take on leadership roles, while other committee members focus primarily on organisational work rather than contesting elections,” the leader said.

Political observers note that the new committee has been formed at a time when the BJP is seeking to regain momentum in West Bengal after mixed electoral performances in recent years. With the Assembly elections approaching, the party appears determined to sharpen its organisational machinery, project unity, and present a clear political narrative to voters across the state.
