Tripura BJP says no seat-sharing talks with Tipra Motha yet ahead of TTAADC elections. State leaders confirm preparations for all 28 seats while several Tipra Motha leaders join BJP, citing development agenda and dissatisfaction over unfulfilled promises.

Amid growing political speculation over the electoral equations between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Tipra Motha Party ahead of the upcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the BJP on Tuesday clarified that no formal discussions regarding seat-sharing have taken place so far.

The statement comes at a time when political observers across Tripura are closely monitoring the relationship between the two allies, both of whom are part of the ruling coalition in the state. Despite their alliance in the state government, both parties appear to be preparing independently to strengthen their position in the TTAADC elections, indicating a possible competitive contest within the coalition framework.

Speaking to reporters, BJP state General Secretary Bipin Debbarma clarified that the party has not received any communication from the central leadership regarding seat-sharing negotiations with Tipra Motha.

“We haven’t received any communication from Delhi regarding seat-sharing with Tipra Motha. If such discussions take place in the future, the party’s high command will certainly step in and oversee the process. As of now, we are preparing to contest all 28 seats of the TTAADC,” Debbarma said.

The clarification aims to dispel speculation circulating in political circles about a potential pre-election arrangement between the two parties. With the TTAADC polls expected to play a crucial role in shaping tribal politics in the state, both BJP and Tipra Motha are actively working to consolidate their support base across the autonomous district council areas.

In a significant political development, several leaders from Tipra Motha recently joined the BJP, adding a new dimension to the evolving political dynamics in the region. According to BJP leaders, at least five members associated with the organisational structure of Tipra Motha have switched allegiance to the BJP, citing the party’s development-oriented governance.

Among the leaders who joined the BJP are Gurupada Debbarma, Usharanjan Debbarma, and Chittaranjan Debbarma, along with two other local political figures. BJP leaders claimed that the new entrants were impressed by the party’s governance model and development initiatives in the state.

Bipin Debbarma said Gurupada Debbarma was a key figure within Tipra Motha and had previously served as a central committee member of the party. He was also known to be a close associate of Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

Debbarma noted that Gurupada Debbarma had been actively involved in regional politics for several years and earlier served as the General Secretary of the Tipraland State Party, which later merged with Tipra Motha before the TTAADC elections.

Speaking to the media after joining the BJP, Gurupada Debbarma expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of Tipra Motha in the TTAADC over the past few years. He alleged that the party failed to fulfil several key promises made during the 2021 elections.

“We worked intensively for Tipra Motha during the 2021 elections. At that time, promises were made regarding filling 30,000 backlog government jobs, recruiting around 6,000 personnel for the TTAADC police, and securing a constitutional solution for indigenous people through the Tiprasa Accord and Greater Tipraland,” he said.

“Five years have passed, but none of these commitments have been implemented in reality. Personally, I feel disappointed with the party’s performance in the TTAADC,” Gurupada Debbarma added.

He further praised the development initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the inclusive development model promoted by the central government influenced his decision to join the BJP.

Political analysts believe that the upcoming TTAADC elections could become a crucial test of influence among tribal voters in Tripura. While the BJP is strengthening its organisational presence across the council areas, Tipra Motha is also expected to push its regional agenda
strongly in the election campaign.

With both parties preparing for all 28 seats and no formal seat-sharing talks yet underway, the political landscape in the TTAADC appears set for an intense contest in the months ahead.
