Congress leader Birajit Sinha has accused the Tripura BJP government of deep-rooted corruption and administrative failure. Addressing Youth Congress, he highlighted scholarship scams, tribal welfare irregularities, and tender manipulation, urging youth to fight misrule amid rising unemployment and drug abuse in the state.
The Congress Party in Tripura has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government, accusing it of widespread corruption, administrative failure, and neglect of pressing issues like unemployment and drug abuse. Veteran Congress leader and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) chief Birajit Sinha made these explosive allegations during an extended session organised by the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress on Tuesday.
The session, focused on the dual crises of rising unemployment and increasing drug abuse among youth, served as a platform for the Congress to highlight what it calls “BJP-sponsored misrule.” Addressing party workers and youth delegates, Sinha alleged that corruption had infiltrated every level of the administration, undermining governance and public welfare.
“The whole administration of Tripura has been engulfed by corruption,” declared Sinha. “The BJP-sponsored misrule is all-pervading and omnipresent across the state. Unemployment is at its peak, and the drug menace has deeply taken root in society.”
He further noted that economic hardship under the current regime has forced lakhs of Tripura’s youth to migrate to other states in search of employment and livelihood opportunities. “The BJP must be held accountable for this failure,” he emphasized.
Shocking Allegations of Scholarship Scam
One of the most alarming allegations made by Sinha concerned a scholarship disbursement scam under the Minority Welfare Corporation. According to him, 30 students were selected for a government scholarship of ₹90,000 each. However, only 10 students actually enrolled in the designated course. The remaining 20, who did not attend the course, still received the full amount in their bank accounts.
“This is nothing short of financial fraud. How can government funds be credited to individuals who haven’t even availed the service? It shows how deep the corruption has gone,” Sinha remarked.
Violations in Tribal Welfare Department
Sinha also raised concerns about irregularities in the Tribal Welfare Department. He claimed that the prescribed process of beneficiary selection was being blatantly violated.
“The Panchayat Samiti’s role in approving beneficiaries has been completely ignored. One individual has been found to be in possession of land title deeds (Pattas) for five different plots and is enjoying benefits meant for five separate persons. This is a gross violation of the scheme’s objectives,” he added.
Lack of Transparency in Tendering Process
In another serious charge, Sinha alleged that the state’s tendering process lacked transparency and was manipulated to benefit politically connected individuals. He cited the example of a recent embankment restoration project in the Chandipur Assembly constituency.
“As part of an embankment restoration effort, the government sanctioned a project worth ₹8 crore to repair 56 kilometres of embankment. However, an influential political leader allegedly demanded ₹1.2 crore from a contractor to manipulate the official process and ensure contract allotment,” he alleged.
Sinha said he had previously raised the issue in the state assembly, prompting the government to act on the restoration work. Yet, he maintained that the corruption surrounding the contract award process needed a thorough investigation.
Congress Vows to Fight Corruption
Calling on the Youth Congress to rise and lead the battle against corruption, Birajit Sinha declared that it was time for young people to take charge and save the state from administrative rot. “We must unite and fight this menace before it completely destroys the democratic fabric of our state,” he urged.
Other senior Congress leaders who attended the event echoed similar sentiments and extended their support to the Youth Congress’s initiatives.

As the state gears up for the next round of political contests, the Congress Party appears to be sharpening its narrative around governance failures, systemic corruption, and youth discontent. The question now is how much political traction these allegations will gain in the coming months.
