Biplab Deb targets Trinamool Congress over remarks on Amit Shah, saying anti-national forces fear strong nationalist leadership. The BJP MP calls opposition statements absurd and politically desperate amid rising political tensions.
Former Tripura Chief Minister and sitting Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from the West Tripura parliamentary constituency, Biplab Kumar Deb, on Friday asserted that anti-national forces are inherently fearful of leaders who strongly represent nationalist ideology.
Speaking to a Delhi-based media channel, Deb launched a veiled attack on West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee following her recent remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Without naming the Trinamool Congress directly, Deb said that leaders and parties who align themselves with anti-national elements tend to feel threatened by strong nationalist leadership. He described such fear as “natural” and politically motivated, particularly when electoral defeat appears imminent.
“All anti-national elements are habitually afraid of the nationalists. It is natural,” Deb said during the interview. Referring to Amit Shah’s electoral record, the BJP leader pointed out that the Union Home Minister had secured one of the highest victory margins in the previous Lok Sabha elections, which, according to him, reflected overwhelming public support.
“Amit Shah won the last parliamentary elections with the third highest margin secured by any Member of Parliament. This clearly signifies that people love him and that he enjoys the blessings of the masses. Those who work hand in glove with anti-national forces are bound to feel afraid of such a leader,” Deb added.
The remarks were widely interpreted as a response to Mamata Banerjee’s recent statement in which she described Amit Shah as “dangerous for the country,” a comment that sparked sharp reactions from BJP leaders across the country. While Deb refrained from taking Banerjee’s name directly, his criticism was clearly aimed at the Trinamool Congress leadership.
Calling the statement “absurd” and politically desperate, Deb said that such comments usually surface when a political party senses its grip on power weakening. “Whenever a political party is on the verge of being dislodged from power, its leaders start making irresponsible and controversial statements. This is done purely to remain in the media spotlight,” he said.
He further added that the BJP does not believe in indulging in rhetorical battles driven by sensationalism. “Let them stay in the media. We will continue to work on the ground, among the people, addressing real issues and fulfilling our responsibilities,” Deb remarked, underscoring the party’s focus on grassroots-level engagement rather than media-driven politics.
Deb also accused the Trinamool Congress of making confusing and contradictory statements that often overlook the constitutional framework of the country. According to him, certain remarks made by opposition leaders tend to ignore the fact that India is a federal state, where responsibilities and powers are clearly defined between the Centre and the states.
“Their statements sometimes show a complete disregard for India’s federal structure. Such narratives are misleading and create unnecessary confusion among the public,” he said.
During the interaction, Deb was also asked about his participation in a recent dinner hosted by the Prime Minister’s Office. Responding to the query, he described the occasion as a moment of pride and collective unity within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
“This was the first time I had the opportunity to be present at such an event organised by the Prime Minister’s Office. All Members of Parliament belonging to the NDA were present at the dinner,” Deb said. He added that such gatherings help strengthen coordination and shared vision among alliance partners.
Political observers view Deb’s remarks as part of the BJP’s broader counter-offensive against opposition narratives ahead of crucial electoral battles in several states. The strong language used against leaders accused of promoting “anti-national” sentiments reflects the party’s continued emphasis on nationalism as a core political theme.

With political temperatures rising and exchanges between the ruling party and opposition becoming increasingly sharp, Deb’s statements are likely to add momentum to the ongoing war of words between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress at the national level.
