Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanks Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enhancing Assam’s central devolution to ₹49,725 crore in the Union Budget, calling it a vote of confidence in the state’s growth, governance reforms, and Viksit Bharat vision.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government for significantly enhancing Assam’s share of central devolution in the latest Union Budget, calling it a strong endorsement of the state’s development trajectory and governance reforms.
The Chief Minister said the increased allocation reflects the Centre’s continued trust in Assam’s economic progress and its commitment to supporting the state’s long-term growth under the vision of Viksit Bharat. According to official figures, Assam has been allocated ₹49,725 crore this year as part of central devolution, marking a substantial boost to the state’s fiscal resources.
Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma acknowledged the Centre’s consistent support for Assam’s development agenda. He stated that the Union government has repeatedly prioritised the state’s growth and rewarded its positive economic momentum through enhanced financial support.
“The Union Government has consistently prioritised development in Assam and has rewarded Assam’s positive growth momentum with an increase in share of Central devolution in the #ViksitBharatBudget. Gratitude to Adarniya @narendramodi ji for allotting ₹49,725 crore this year to support our growth ambitions,” the Chief Minister posted.
Senior officials in the Assam government said the enhanced devolution would significantly strengthen the state’s fiscal capacity, allowing higher investments across critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, connectivity, and social welfare. The additional funds are also expected to provide the state government with greater flexibility in designing and implementing region-specific development programmes tailored to Assam’s unique socio-economic needs.
The Chief Minister has consistently maintained that Assam’s improving financial position is the outcome of sustained governance reforms, disciplined fiscal management, and focused development initiatives undertaken over the past few years. According to officials in the state finance department, Assam has recorded steady growth in both tax and non-tax revenues, alongside improved utilisation of central funds and reduced fiscal leakages.
CM Sarma further highlighted that the Centre’s support has played a crucial role in accelerating major infrastructure projects across the state. These include the expansion of national highways, construction of strategic bridges, modernisation of railway networks, development of inland waterways, and large-scale urban infrastructure initiatives.
He emphasised that such infrastructure investments are essential for integrating Assam more closely with national and regional markets. Improved connectivity, he said, would not only boost trade and tourism but also generate employment opportunities and attract greater private sector investment into the state.
Political analysts note that the increased central devolution comes at a critical time when Assam is positioning itself as a key growth engine of the Northeast. The state government has been actively projecting Assam as a gateway to Southeast Asia, focusing on sectors such as logistics, tourism, manufacturing, renewable energy, and petrochemicals.

With enhanced financial support from the Centre, Assam is expected to scale up its development programmes in alignment with the broader national objective of inclusive and balanced regional growth envisioned under Viksit Bharat. Officials added that the fresh allocation would enable the state to accelerate welfare schemes, strengthen public service delivery, and improve overall quality of life for citizens.
The state government is likely to announce new initiatives and fast-track ongoing projects in the coming months, leveraging the increased central devolution to maintain Assam’s growth momentum and reinforce its role as a development leader in the Northeast.
