Assam Congress leader Banashree Gogoi resigned from all party posts and primary membership, intensifying political pressure on Congress after its poor Assam Assembly election performance and triggering fresh speculation over shifting political dynamics in the state.
Senior Assam Congress leader Banashree Gogoi has resigned from all party positions and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress, creating another major challenge for the party in the state after its disappointing Assembly election performance.
Gogoi, who served as National Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress, submitted her resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday. In her resignation letter, she announced that she was stepping down from every organisational responsibility with immediate effect.
“I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, responsibilities, and the Primary Membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect,” Gogoi stated in the letter.
Her exit is being viewed as a significant political development in Assam, where the Congress party has been struggling to regain momentum after facing a severe electoral defeat in the recent Assembly elections. Political observers believe the resignation may further weaken the party’s organisational structure in the state at a time when internal dissatisfaction and leadership questions continue to surface.
Gogoi expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership for the opportunities she received during her years with the party. She also stated that despite leaving the organisation, she would continue working for the welfare of the people of Assam and the country in her personal capacity.
“I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences I received during my association with the Party. I will continue to work for the people of Assam and the nation in my personal capacity,” she wrote.
Copies of the resignation letter were also sent to All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi.
The resignation has sparked fresh political speculation across Assam, especially after the Congress party’s poor showing in the Assembly elections. The party was reduced to only 19 seats in the 126-member Assembly, marking one of its weakest electoral performances in the state in recent years.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance secured a commanding victory in the elections, winning 102 seats overall. The BJP alone captured 82 seats, while its allies and regional parties strengthened the alliance’s dominance in the state’s political landscape.
Regional parties including the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad secured 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal managed two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress opened its account with one seat.
The latest resignation comes at a time when several former Congress leaders in Assam have either distanced themselves from the party or openly criticised its functioning. Recently, former Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah strongly criticised his former party after switching to the BJP before the Assembly polls.
Borah, who contested from the Bihpuria Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket and won, stated that the Congress was now “reaping what it had sown” following its crushing electoral defeat. He credited Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the BJP’s sweeping victory and praised the government’s development-oriented agenda.
According to Borah, the people of Assam had once again shown confidence in the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP government. He described the election outcome as a strong endorsement of the ruling alliance’s governance and political strategy.
Banashree Gogoi’s resignation has now added another layer of uncertainty to the Congress party’s future in Assam. Political analysts believe the development could encourage further realignments within the opposition camp ahead of future electoral battles in the state.

While Gogoi has not yet announced her next political move, her departure is expected to intensify discussions over the Congress party’s organisational stability and leadership challenges in Assam.
