Frank Gehry, the groundbreaking architect whose daring, sculptural designs reshaped skylines around the world, has died at 96. He passed away Friday at his Santa Monica home following a brief respiratory illness, confirmed Meaghan Lloyd, chief of staff at Gehry Partners LLP.
Gehry became one of the most celebrated architects of his era, best known for iconic works such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the DZ Bank Building in Berlin.
His influence extended into Silicon Valley as well, designing the expansion of Facebook’s headquarters at the request of CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Though widely admired, Gehry’s unconventional style also attracted critics who viewed some of his later designs as excessive or tourist-driven.
