
Even as the state was reeling under devastating flood situation and destructions all around, the Assam Rifles, which was pressed into rescue operations, shifted as many as 1,740 stranded villagers from their submerged houses in the last couple of days to safer places.
Officials said, two Assam Rifles rescue columns consisting of 80 personnel and four motor boats were launched immediately after receiving the requisition from the civil administration in various parts of Gomati and West Tripura district.
Riflewomen of Assam Rifles have proved to be an asset during the rescue operation as they help in saving the dignity of women folk in embarrassing circumstances requiring privacy during the rescue operation.
“So far, Assam Rifles columns have rescued 1,740 stranded villagers from very difficult situations working tirelessly till midnight in the last 72 hours”, a senior Assam Rifles official said.
Medical aid including free medical check-up and other humanitarian assistance were also provided to the aggrieved villagers.
Officials added that there had been smooth coordination between all agencies including the Civil administration, TSR and NDRF teams which helped the paramilitary personnel to carry out their assigned task efficiently and effectively. The DMs and SDMs of both the Gomati and West Tripura district were in constant touch with the Assam Rifles authorities to deal with any emergency in the state, the official added.
