AMC begins clearing the decades-old Netaji Chowmuhani market near Rupashi Multiplex for road expansion and civic infrastructure development. Over 50 traders vacate shops after rehabilitation assurances from the government. The peaceful eviction drive marks a major step toward urban modernization while safeguarding affected livelihoods.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated the clearance of a decades-old marketplace located near Netaji Chowmuhani beside Rupashi Multiplex, marking a significant step in the city’s ongoing urban development and road expansion plans. The market, which has served as a livelihood hub for local traders for nearly four decades, is being dismantled to facilitate improved civic infrastructure and traffic management in the area.
More than 50 shop owners began vacating their establishments on Sunday after receiving a final three-day notice from the municipal authorities. The structures, constructed on government land, are being removed as part of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing the city’s infrastructure and improving public amenities.
For several months, the proposed eviction had been a matter of concern among traders, many of whom feared losing their primary source of income. The issue led to repeated discussions between business owners and government officials, with traders seeking assurances regarding their future rehabilitation and business continuity.
The situation took a positive turn after a delegation of affected shop owners met Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder and later held discussions with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. During these meetings, the state government assured traders that suitable rehabilitation arrangements would be made, encouraging them to cooperate with the clearance process.
Following the assurances, shop owners started removing merchandise, electrical fittings, furniture, and other valuables from their establishments to prevent losses during demolition. While many expressed sadness over leaving a marketplace that had supported generations of families, they acknowledged the importance of urban development and improved civic infrastructure.
“Our families depend entirely on these businesses. We understand the need for development, but we hope the government will fulfill its commitment and provide an alternative location at the earliest,” said one trader while overseeing the removal of goods from his shop.
The market has long been recognized as a vibrant commercial hub despite being situated on government land and above drainage infrastructure. Over the years, it became an important center for small businesses, providing employment and supporting numerous families across the city.
Unlike previous phases marked by tension and uncertainty, the current clearance drive is proceeding peacefully, reflecting a successful outcome of negotiations between traders and the administration. Authorities believe this cooperative approach will help ensure smooth implementation of the development project.
AMC officials stated that the cleared area will be utilized for road widening, traffic improvement measures, and the creation of enhanced civic amenities. They also reiterated that rehabilitation plans are being developed to protect the livelihoods of affected traders.
