Amarpur celebrates women empowerment with 3,000 lamps lighting up a pre-Diwali event. MLA Ranjit Das and officials honor self-help groups like ‘Saksham,’ promoting equality, social awareness, and community progress through culture and women-led initiatives.
The serene premises of the Amarpur RD Block Office came alive with the warm glow of 3,000 earthen lamps on Friday evening, as residents and dignitaries gathered to celebrate a pre-Diwali festival dedicated to women’s empowerment and social progress. The remarkable event was inaugurated by MLA Ranjit Das, marking not just a festive occasion, but a shining symbol of collective respect and recognition for women’s growing role in shaping society.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Suchitra Das, Chairperson of Amarpur Block Panchayat Samiti; Subhash Acharya, Additional District Magistrate of Gomati; Remita Saha (IAS), Assistant Collector; Swarupa Riang, Revenue Officer; Debanjali Roy, SDPO of Udaipur Sub-Division; and Utpal Das, BDO of Amarpur RD Block.
Festival of Light, Message of Change
Welcoming guests, BDO Utpal Das explained that while the lighting of 3,000 lamps was the visual highlight, the true essence of the program lay in its message—uplifting women and celebrating their empowerment. He reflected on how society has evolved over the years, moving away from regressive practices such as child marriage, gender discrimination, and social exclusion of women.
“Today, women are standing on their own feet, earning recognition, and contributing meaningfully to every sphere of life,” Das said. “This progress brings immense pride to our community and shows how far we have come.”
He also highlighted the outstanding achievements of self-help groups (SHGs) under the Amarpur RD Block, noting how these women-led initiatives have transformed local economies and social structures.
‘Saksham’ – Lighting Lives Through Enterprise
A special mention was made of ‘Saksham’, a self-help group that has earned statewide acclaim for its efforts in producing and marketing eco-friendly clay lamps. This initiative not only promotes traditional craftsmanship but also provides livelihood opportunities to women artisans in the community.
“The success of ‘Saksham’ reflects how women’s collective effort can generate respect, income, and sustainable change,” said the BDO, lauding the group’s commitment to self-reliance and creativity.
Their lamps were among the 3,000 that illuminated the night sky of Amarpur—each one symbolizing a story of perseverance, hope, and empowerment.
Voices of Encouragement
In his address, MLA Ranjit Das commended the organizers for hosting such a meaningful celebration. “Lighting lamps before Diwali is a tradition of joy and unity. When that light represents women’s empowerment, it becomes a message of transformation,” he remarked.
He emphasized that events like these remind society to honor the contributions of women—not just as homemakers or caregivers, but as entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers.
ADM Subhash Acharya and SDPO Debanjali Roy echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for continued efforts to ensure equality, education, and opportunity for all women, especially in rural and semi-urban regions.
Culture Meets Awareness
Adding to the evening’s charm were cultural performances by local artists and students. The program featured puppet dances, folk music, and theatrical plays, each carrying strong social messages.
Through art, performers addressed issues like environmental protection, ending child marriage, and promoting women’s rights, ensuring that the audience left with not only joy in their hearts but also awareness in their minds.
The event beautifully balanced celebration with education—illustrating how culture can serve as a bridge for social change.
A Beacon of Hope for the Future
As thousands of lamps flickered across the Amarpur RD Block Office grounds, they seemed to represent more than light—they symbolized resilience, equality, and progress. For the women of Amarpur and beyond, the event stood as a reminder that empowerment begins when communities come together to celebrate and support each other.
