Today we remember Param Vir Chakra awardee Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal who gave the supreme sacrifice during 1971 Indo-Pak War.
Born in 1950 in Pune, Maharashtra, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was commissioned in Poona Horse in June 1971. During India-Pakistan war in 1971, 47 Indian Infantry Brigade with Poona Horse under command was ordered to establish a bridge-head across Basantar River.
After the Infantry completed its work, engineers were tasked with clearing minefields. During the work Indian troops reported alarming activity of enemy armour. Next day enemy made a counter attack with an armour regiment under the cover of smoke screen. The Commander of B Squadron requested reinforcement. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was positioned close to the Squadron with his troops in two tanks.
He answered the call and moved out to face the enemy attack. On the way, his troops came under fire from enemy strong points. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal fiercely attacked the points, over ran defences and captured many enemy soldiers. During the attack, the Commander of his Second tank was killed leaving him alone. But he continued attack on the enemy strongholds single handed until all enemy positions were overwhelmed.
Then, rushing to B Squadron, he destroyed one enemy tank. During the enemy’s second attack which was followed by a fierce tank battle, ten enemy tanks were destroyed and of these, four were alone destroyed by Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal. His tank was shot and burst into flame,s but he continued to destroy enemy tanks. The brave Jawan met his death when his tank was again hit. For his indomitable spirit, exceptional courage, and supreme sacrifice at the age of just 21, 2nd Lt Arun Khetarpal was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra in 1972. The Nation Salutes Him.
