Agartala Mayor Deepak Majumder inspects the Bani Vidyapith site for a Rs 22 crore overhead water tank and treatment project aimed at resolving Ramnagar’s long-standing drinking water crisis and supplying clean water to 2,700 households.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to construct a major overhead water tank along with an integrated water treatment system in the Ramnagar area. The proposed infrastructure is aimed at ensuring a consistent and safe supply of potable water to thousands of residents who have been facing acute shortages for years.

On Wednesday, Agartala Mayor Deepak Majumder visited the proposed project site located at the premises of Bani Vidyapith Girls’ School. He was accompanied by senior officials from the Agartala Municipal Corporation and the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) department. The inspection focused on assessing land suitability, technical feasibility, and timelines for the ambitious Rs 22 crore project.

Speaking to the media during the site visit, Mayor Majumder emphasized that the project is a top priority for the civic body. He said the initiative is designed to permanently address drinking water scarcity in several densely populated pockets of Ramnagar, where residents have long depended on irregular and insufficient water supply.

As part of the project, a 5.5 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant will be established at Netaji Adarsha Shiksha Mandir in the Master Para area. The treatment facility will be constructed on approximately 16 gandas of land, aligning with the state government’s broader plan to strengthen urban water infrastructure across Agartala.

According to the project blueprint, water treated at the new Master Para facility, along with additional supply from the existing Rampur water treatment bank, will be stored in the proposed overhead water tank at Bani Vidyapith Girls’ School. From there, the water will be distributed through a dedicated pipeline network to surrounding residential areas.

Once completed, the project is expected to provide direct household water connections to nearly 2,700 families across municipal wards 20 and 32. The coverage area includes Ramnagar localities numbered 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, which are among the worst-affected zones in terms of water scarcity.

Mayor Majumder stated that instructions have been issued to concerned departments to expedite procedural clearances and begin work at the earliest possible time. He reiterated that ensuring uninterrupted access to safe drinking water remains one of the core responsibilities of the Agartala Municipal Corporation and a key focus of the current administration.

Civic officials expressed confidence that the Rs 22 crore project, once operational, would significantly improve public health standards, reduce dependence on water tankers, and enhance overall quality of life for residents in the Ramnagar region.
