Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder inspected Smart City drainage works on Lakshmi Narayan Bari and Women’s College roads, emphasizing timely monsoon preparedness, box culvert construction, and improved water management to prevent flooding and ensure public convenience across the city.

In a proactive move to strengthen Agartala’s urban infrastructure under the ongoing Smart City initiative, Mayor Dipak Majumder on Saturday carried out an extensive field inspection of the covered drain construction works along Lakshmi Narayan Bari Road and Women’s College Road. The inspection aimed to evaluate the progress, quality, and efficiency of drainage development projects crucial to managing waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.

The inspection formed part of the Agartala Smart City Mission’s ongoing urban renewal plan, designed to transform the city’s civic infrastructure and improve the overall quality of life for its residents. With the monsoon rains often leading to localized flooding and disruption, the Mayor’s visit highlighted the administration’s emphasis on preventive maintenance and sustainable water management systems.

During his visit, Mayor Majumder engaged in detailed discussions with officials from multiple government departments, including Urban Development, Public Works, and Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS). He directed all stakeholders to accelerate repair and construction works to ensure that major drains and road networks are ready before the peak of the rainy season.

“We are committed to minimizing public inconvenience and ensuring smooth water discharge systems across the city. Every development project is being executed with the utmost concern for pedestrian and commuter safety,” the Mayor remarked while addressing officials and local media.

According to municipal sources, covered drainage systems are being implemented across several critical zones of Agartala to replace outdated open drains. The new infrastructure will not only mitigate waterlogging but also help maintain hygiene and reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases that typically rise during the monsoon.

One of the key directives issued by the Mayor during the inspection was to construct box culverts in flood-prone areas. These culverts will enhance the city’s capacity to manage high-intensity rainfall and prevent overflow onto streets and residential localities. The box culvert model, already in use in several Smart City projects across India, provides better structural strength and long-term sustainability compared to conventional drainage channels.

The inspection was attended by a high-level delegation including Abhishek Singh, Secretary of Urban Development, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited, along with engineers from the DWS Department and representatives of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). The presence of senior officials reflected the city administration’s collective focus on delivering quality public infrastructure under the Smart City framework.

Officials accompanying the Mayor briefed him on the current status of multiple Smart City projects, particularly those related to drainage, sanitation, and road improvement. They also discussed challenges related to material procurement, coordination among departments, and maintaining traffic flow during construction.

The Mayor urged all agencies to maintain high construction standards while ensuring that work sites remain accessible and safe for pedestrians. He also emphasized timely completion and regular monitoring to avoid last-minute disruptions during the rains.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation has recently intensified its focus on monsoon preparedness, identifying vulnerable pockets within the city where poor drainage has historically led to severe waterlogging. The corporation is also integrating modern mapping and hydrological analysis tools under the Smart City Mission to develop a scientifically planned drainage system capable of handling the growing urban population and changing climate patterns.

As the city continues to expand, experts believe that proactive initiatives such as these inspections will help prevent recurring flooding and improve resilience against extreme weather. By linking the Smart City vision with sustainable infrastructure, the administration aims to transform Agartala into a cleaner, safer, and more livable urban space.

The Mayor concluded the inspection by reaffirming AMC’s commitment to completing all key projects on schedule. “Agartala’s citizens deserve reliable infrastructure and hassle-free mobility. Our efforts under the Smart City initiative are directed toward achieving these goals before the monsoon arrives,” Majumder said.
