In a momentous development set to reshape trade dynamics in South Asia, the Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway is slated for inauguration on September 9, 2023. This transformative infrastructure project will be virtually inaugurated by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic step towards bolstering economic connectivity between the two nations.

Project Overview: The Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway encompasses a 12.24-kilometer railway line connecting Akhaura in Bangladesh to Nishchintpur in Agartala, India. The Bangladesh section of this railway spans 6.78 kilometers, serving as a vital link between the two countries.

Trade Facilitation: The inauguration of this railway project signifies a new era in cross-border trade. It is poised to facilitate the seamless transportation of goods between Chittagong Port in Bangladesh and the northeastern states of India, effectively reducing transportation costs and transit times. This development is set to substantially boost trade activities between the two nations.

Construction Challenges: The project faced several hurdles, including delays attributable to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the construction of the 6.78-kilometer section in Bangladesh, estimated at Tk241 crore, has now been successfully completed.

Benefits for North-East India: One of the standout advantages of the Akhaura-Agartala railway is its direct connection between Bangladesh and the northeastern states of India. This connection is anticipated to catalyze economic growth and foster increased trade in the northeastern region. Moreover, it will substantially reduce the distance between Kolkata and Agartala, cutting approximately 1100 kilometers from the current route.

Safety and Cost-Effectiveness: Rail transportation is widely regarded as a safer and more cost-effective means of moving goods compared to road transport. The inauguration of this railway is expected to render trade more efficient and affordable.

Memorandum of Understanding: The seeds of this transformative project were sown during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in 2010 when a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two nations to facilitate the construction of this critical railway infrastructure.

The Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway holds immense promise for enhancing trade and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and India. Its inauguration will herald a new era of connectivity and economic vitality in the region, fostering stronger bilateral ties and unlocking unprecedented opportunities for businesses and communities on both sides of the border.
